Belt Routing Questions

Post by memsiej »

Got a 5.9 V8 that *in theory* has AC but it doesn't work (maybe because of the missing belt). The rig should have two belts, but as long as I've had it it's only had the one, because the alternator pulley was a single track instead of a double. Bought a new pulley and both belts, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the routing that the second belt should take.

Found this image but it looks to me like there are three belts on there? So now I'm really confused...

Red circled is the part I have to replace with a dual pulley, but now I'm confused because the diagram shows the alternator SHOULD only have one belt.

Both of mine have two belts on the alt - would just swap the double pulley over, can't hurt to have more contact area!

Actually, here's a picture from the '84 TSM - you can see the dual belt routing here.

THIS THANK YOU. I'll probably figure it out tomorrow, but I'm ASSUMING there's a bolt on the alternator pulley to loosen the belt and one to get the pulley off?

I can't remember if the pulley on alternators is pressed on? You might need a pulley puller (available for rent at most McParts stores). I know the power steering is...can't remember about alternators, though.

To swap the pulley, just use an impact driver, it’ll spin the nut right off. They’re not pressed on.

Can’t think of another way to do it without damaging the pulley. If you don’t have a driver, the guys at the garage would probably do it, only takes about 5 seconds.

The 82 tsm says to use an Allen wrench which will go into the shaft and a open end wrench. Hold the shaft from turning with the Allen wrench and loosen the nut with the open end. I just used an impact when I did mine
