Fan shroud

Post by Catstrader »

:fsj: New to the FSJ world since about a week ago! I purchased a 1980 Cherokee Chief. Among many other problems I’ve come here for help with the fan shroud; or lack thereof. The motor is still running hot and I’m told I need a fan shroud, but I can not find that they were even made for this vehicle or the 1980 Wagoneer. Any suggestions? Know if one that is interchangeable with another FSJ? I’m located in Alaska as well so that adds to the difficulty factor in locating them.

Same here. Aluminum rad and no shroud and it does well. There are two shrouds on ebay right now. Search FSJ fan shroud and it should come up

Welcome to the madness! On the ebay items, there is really only one because the $79 one is a broken up piece of crap. There are some things to check before you buy one. Is it a I6 or V8? The I6 radiator is a little narrower than the V8. Has the cooling system been flushed out? Is the water pump any good? Is there crusty crud inside the radiator? Has the thermostat been replaced yet? Good Luck!

I never said the ebay one was good lol. The other is NOS though. My two cents, if you buy an aluminum one dont buy a cheap one. I did and it started a light drip in under a year. Not enough leak to write home about but enough to be frustrating. If i did it again i would have saved my money and either bought a reputable brand aluminum or went with a brass/copper one. Again, just my 2 cents

Also, iirc, CJ I6 shrouds worked with V8 and I6 FSJs. Correct me if i am wrong but there were only mild variances. I know the rad could be interchanged but it was a smaller capacity, a friend of mine has one in his 67 with a 4.2 and it worked ok to my knowledge

Ha, I was just pointing out what is obvious to some of us about it since Catstrader doesn't have one.

Ok so what I’m getting here is that a CJ shroud should work? I have an inline 6 that we believe is not a 1989 like the vehicle. All the other suggestions have been done I believe, I have new radiator hoses, I changed the thermostat etc. Do need to check the fan clutch I think. I’m gonna take by a radiator shop today and see if they can custom make one or get me an aluminum radiator without bending me over. Thank for all the advice!

If you cant find one for a FSJ then i say dig through the local junkyards and look at CJ/YJ/TJ shrouds with an I6 engine. Take measurements of your rad where a shroud would go if you had one and include the inlet and outlet cutouts. Or make a cardboard template even and bring it with you. Its a gamble if itll fit correctly but theyre pretty darn close. May need to make minor mods but nothing crazy. Personally i would buy that NOS one on ebay if i was in the market but thats just me. Also measure the fan blade diameter and make sure the shroud will have some wiggle room aroubd the blade. Things move when you rev the engine. You dont want to install it and have it shreded the first time you goose the throttle

I have a BJ's Aluminum for my i6 (I helped develop it with them) with no shroud, and it runs cool as a cucumber, even on 105F days pulling grades.

The CJ radiator is a different size, and I do not think the shroud will work as they also use a smaller fan.

If you really need a fan shroud, there are articles on the 'net about making your own. Does not seem difficult.

Many, many more online articles if you search.

I watched my friend bolt a CJ rad in place on his 67. Unsure of what year it was from though. It is thinner without a doubt but his bolted right up. Im not trying to argue, just stating what i witnessed. The shroud is another story. He doesnt have a shroud on his. Thats why i said it was a gamble and to take measurements. Just trying to help. Aluminum is the way to go. With temps in the high 90s i run average 190-215 depending on the traffic and driving conditions. Idling in a parking lot for a little while it will get up to 225 sometimes but cools fast when i start moving again

It is quite possible the 60's models had smaller radiators. Would not surprise me. I have never had them side by side to compare.

I recall the six cylinder radiator is the same width as a CJ radiator. As we know, the 6 and V8 core supports are different, and the V8 radiator is wider.

Correct. I use a v8 support and rad with my I6. When i replaced the support with a donor v8 one the original rad wouldnt fit it correct. Its close but not close enough

The seller I got my radiator from is called radiators4less, good source. Mine has been on 5 plus years and I have had NO issue with mine. They should be able to help ya track something down :) Found him on Ebay :)

Radiators4Less is a good seller, in that they will stand by the terms of the sale. However, I bought an aluminum replacement radiator for my J20 from their eBay ad and it did not fit. The terms of the sale from the eBay ad did not include return shipping if the radiator does not fit. This will be a significant expense if you need to return, something like $30-40. Buyer beware.

BTW the plastic and aluminum replacement radiator I bought from RockAuto fit perfectly and works fine.
