Drive shaft rebuild.

Post by toothofwar »

Now that the pumpkin is up and somewhat running I am looking at rebuilding the front driveshaft. I had a spare one lying around, but it's not in much better shape. I can find the u joints pretty easy, but I'm having a really hard time finding the centering yoke. The spring I broke in both of mine and would like to have everything as new as I can. Does anyone have a part number for ether the whole driveshaft, or just the centering yoke and u joints? It in a 79 wt cherokee. 360/th400/qt

Thanks.

It's fairly easy. I rebuilt one and got the stuff from Amazon, then spent maybe two hours getting it back together. Get the new parts then disassemble the shaft.

The problem I'm running into is the centering yoke I'm finding is for a 80s and up. I can't tell from the pictures if it is the same as mine or not. The part number I'm finding is 1310 for the driveshaft and 211544x for the centering yoke. Does these sound right?

My factory parts book shows that the '79 centering yoke is the same as the '80 centering yoke. Centering yoke is Jeep PN 8130303.

In my experience, any front shaft I have had where the double-carden is worn out, so is the slip joint. And if the slip joint is bad, you basically need a new drive shaft. So I have never ended up rebuilding one.

Agree with Stuka, if the driveshaft has been neglected enough and never greased to the point where the centering yoke is toast, the splines/slip yoke are probably rusted/wallowed out. I experienced this, and went through the process of having a driveshaft shop weld on a new Spicer slip yoke. When you look at the costs of a new slip yoke, new u joints/full double cardan rebuild, and balance/labor, the cost approaches what a new custom driveshaft would be. Take a look at Adams Driveshaft or Tom Woods driveshaft. You can get a custom, heavy duty driveshaft (complete with u-joints) for around $200+ Just my 2 cents... I've never ordered one for an SJ, not sure T-case and yokes you have, so not sure if they would have your combo off the shelf.
