Mounting tires on rims by hand

Post by Hendo2.5 »

Is it normal for it to be a huge pain to mount a 35" tire on a 15" rim? I watched a few people do it on YouTube pretty efficiently but when I tried it it seemed impossible. At least without trashing the rim.

Lube is your friend, and the bigger your prying device the better. If you have a friend to help it makes it easier. Either way it sucks. I mounted 4 tires on my MJ as a teenager with two big flathead screwdrivers and a half gallon of Tide I stole from my mom lol. I did them one at a time by myself on the tailgate. Took me about 3 hours and sucked the life out of me but i did it. If i had to do it again i would just pay someone a few bucks and have them do it with a machine.

I guess thats what I will do. They want $30 a tire but 3 hours isn't worth the savings.

Believe me, the aggravation is worth spending the 30 bucks. Plus even if you mount them youll still have to pay to balance unless you use something like dynabeads (which i recommend on 35s regardless)

$30 per tire?! My local shop charges $30 for the whole vehicle, mounted and balanced.

But I agree, mounting tires without a machine is hell unless you are doing bead locks.

I found a place that did it for $20 per wheel, I'm happier now.

Definitely not worth the aggravation.
