Waggy 229 tcase to 208 or other? For Gear Vendors

Post by zonearc »

Hi! I'd like to see if its possible to hang an overdrive on my Grand Wagoneer. A727 transmission with 229 means I can't as they want to hang off the back of the t-case and they don't support the 229. They support all the standards .. .208, 205, etc. I'm wondering .. wasn't there a Jeep 208 out there once? If it would bolt up to the 727 then it would have the correct side drop without having to be clocked and then this might work. Any thoughts or advice from the experts? =)

Thanks!

Actually, some more digging and it looks like the J series NP208 is a direct bolt in just shorter?

If so, this could work really well. The question is ... how do you handle the linkage from the 229 which uses vacuum? Is there a cable or linkage kit?

And any other concerns with the 208 behind the 727? Should be 23 spline too since its a direct right?

Yes, NP208AM. One thing different with one of them is the 208 input spline count when attached to T18 in the 80s J20s. The 727 and T17X applications used same input spline count and is different than the T18 application. I have a 401/727/208 set up in my GW. It was easy peasy swap. The rear output shaft will need to be longer. The rear drive shaft from a 74-79 V8/T400/QT Wag or Cherk is a direct fit. You can even use the NP229 flag shifter. Just remove the vacuum stuff for the 229.

Overdrive is another story...
