Interesting.. never knew the tailgate key cover had this

Post by candymancan »

I was about to sell the cover and key mechanism on ebay but as i was trying to open the cover it was fighting me and flipped back.

Looked closer and its got a spring inside to close it automaticly lol.

I know this may sound like a durrr post.. But mine and the 7 other wagoneers ive found never had this lol.. So i guess they break alot ? Did you guys know they were spring loaded

sadly the chrome on my (broken) one looks better so im unsure if ima put this one on or not.. And its also centered better and in a way i dont like the spring gatta use two hands now.. But then i do always forget to close the darn cover.

Mmm decisions... Too bad you cant take the spring out.. the cover is riveted on

Yes. The original ones had a spring. That is why they were recalled on later 80's models. The spring pressure could hold the key and cause the window to close without you holding on to the key. IIRC, there was a 60 minutes or 20/20 story about it and how some kids (obviously unsupervised and key left with the vehicle) were killed by it. The recall repair was an "upside down" key cover and a warning label that said to remove key when not in use.

ohh i see damn.. i never heard of that i wonder if there isa youtube videi.

I wondered why they put a warning lable to remove the key.. and why some werr upside down and others were upright.

Interesting.. Im putting my old one back on

The cover on the one with the working spring is loose so when i drive it rattles i can hear it. My old one is snug eve without a spring.

That sucks about people dying.

btw my 90 has a spring. its just broken

I must have changed a thousand of those during my time at the dealership. It was actually one child that died due to the cover keeping the key in the UP position.

I have never seen one flip up or down. My 79 pivots to the side on a small pin. It does have the sticker that says always remove key.
