tailpipe gone

Post by candymancan »

well my tailpipe has 6 tiger patchs on it lol holes from end to end.. Time for a new one lol not sure if its the original but its rusting badly and fast the last year or two flaking off big time. Its the pipe muffler back. Already replaced the one exhaust pipe drivers side that curv 90 degrees under the oil pan that meets the two pipes together.. and the muffler and cat.

the only ones i can find are from a brand called walker. aluminized steel.. Probably cheap steel that rusts but who knows. its only 60$. Has anyone use these pipes from walker ?

My experience with Walker parts here in the Northeast is they lasted maybe 3 years. The pipe my local muffler shop uses has lasted for nearly 15 years.

My local shop uses aluminized steel, but they guarantee the pipes of a complete install for 10 years. AFAIK the only difference is the quality of the material.

I agree that a local shop that can show you the pipe they use could be a better option than ordering online or going through the usual parts chain stores.

My 98 4Runner is my daily and has had a Walker tailpipe and muffler on it for about 3 years. It's ok still but nothing special.

The duals on my J truck were done by a local shop about 10 or 11 years ago. They're not stainless but they are relatively thick wall. I painted them with some black alkyd enamel to help them last.

Walker isn’t great quality. Just have a good shop bend/install a new one.
Probably only little more than $60, but it’ll likely last longer and have mandrel bends.

If you want it to last longer scuff & paint it w/ exhaust paint.

what are mandrel bends ? Are these bends without those ripples in the piping like my old one has ?

Yes. The mandrel is the tool inside the pipe as it's bent to keep it from collapsing/wrinkling.

I see. well i already have a magnaflow cat and flowmaster muffler on which shouldnt rust out for years n years i hope. So i guess ill cut off the tailpipe and bring it to a muffler shop and see how much itll be to bend a stainless tailpipe.

doing some research on walker and they do seem to be pretty bad and i dont wanna deal with exhaust piping again in 2 years

Walker uses thin gauge metal, youre better off having a shop bend you something real. More money but longer life. Could always make it from galvanized also.

I would guess stainless will be about twice what aluminized steel will be. The material is more expensive and it's harder to work with. I have stainless on my VW, but it's a complete exhaust 'system' which I installed. IIRC it was about $500 for the cat-back system.

I'd just leave the pipe on, have shop do it. No guarantee it'll fit properly bent off truck.
Stainless will easily be 2-3 times cost of standard pipe.
Local shop here said $75 to bend up and install a new 3" tailpipe on my '88...obviously in your area that may not be accurate pricing.
One of these days I'll drop it off, but I have to round up a 3" CAT & muffler first.

Called a few places closeby they all wanted roughly 150$ for aluminized steel and 250 for stainless.. The other shops weve been too before for my moms jeep before i started working on cars and they are all bad shops.

Everything else is a 40 min or so drive one way... Northern va doesnt have many good shops i noticed.

Kinda bumms me out.. Ima just order the walker pipe for 60$ and clamp or weld it on myself.. If it rusts in 2 or 3 years.. then whatever.. Not paying 150$ for a shop to do it using the same type of steel and 250 is too much for just a tailpipe imo.

I remember my mom had her muffler and tailpipe and cat done at this guys shop called Alex automotive which supposedly is the best shop around here.. and 2 years later all his welds and everything fell apart and i had to redo it myself.

So if the walker falls apart and his falls apart then im still saving money.. Uhg

Why is it so hard to find good shops.. Got my tires balenced and rotated a month ago and i had to help them take off the tires and they didnt balence em right as i habe vibrations now.. Simple things man.

A friends Jeep i work on she brought in for insoecyion and they told her her head gasket was bad.. They sprayed something on the engine she said and the guy wanted 250 to fix thr head gasket... LOL i laughed and was like wtf kinda lie bs is that.

I have used Walker parts for years on various vehicles and been very happy. NO it is NOT SS, but it does fit the way it should and I bought one from Summit for 64.99 and a $10.00 fee for larger package!! Had in two days and also ordered the DynoMax Super Turbo muffler. Great sound and they hold up well in Midwest winters! Just my 2 cents.....American made too!

$250 for a stainless steel pipe seems decent. It's even a better deal if it's mandrel bent, but at that price, it's probably a crush bend.

FWIW, if you're not worried about looks, you can weld up your own system with the prebent angles and straight pipes you can buy off the shelf. I even used a stick welder! It won't be pretty, for sure, but it works.

mmm never thought about that.. But it would be a lot of welds.. and welds rust faster then no welds..

I wonder if i can find the amount of piping and keep it under 60$ though

I used the old tailpipe off my '99 F250 superduty, had to cut & weld it once to get angle right, but it kinda fit haha.

my hitch is aftermarket not OEM
clamp yours in place if OEM your frame likely already has holes there?
