6 swap to 8

Post by BCRAWLER »

Looking to purchase a 74 J10. It has the 258/6 with manual 4 speed. Want to swap in 360. Will it bolt up or do I need to replace bellhouse? Knew I need new rad.

You actually will need a whole core support to fit the V8 radiator.

The 360 will bolt up, but the transmission will get moved 5" forward, most likely putting the shifter close to be under the dash. You may be able to bend the shifter to work. But this also will result in a much shorter front drive shaft (and longer rear). Typically the V8 manuals have a longer input shaft with a spacer between the bell housing and the transmission.

So what you really want is a V8 version T18a, a V8 front core support, a V8 radiator, a V8 battery box (battery mounts differently on V8s), V8 engine mounts, And the fuel pump is on the opposite side of the engine, so the stock fuel lines won't work. Although an electric pump can solve this. This is what pops into my mind, I am sure I may be missing things.

There's a lot that changes between the six and V8.

A 4.0L HO swap is a much better idea, IMO. Similar highway performance to a 360, excellent Mopar/Bosch multiport fuel injection, much better on fuel. Drops on the mounts, transmission stays in the same place. Can be stroked to a 4.6L motor using the 258 crankshaft you already have ... seems like a no brainer.
