sucessfully repaired a overhead console

Post by candymancan »

Bought two consoles from two 89s a month or so ago. one worked and sold it on ebay for 250 the other didnt work

I took the thing apart and it was blown in the same spots my original console was and what ive seen online as well.

I decided to do some cleaning and at first i thought the little square resistors or capacitors were blown and took the board traces with it.

But in further insoection it had 2 blown electrolye capacitors. I decided to order all new caps and the crystal as well since it looked funky with a weird green goo on it.

I replaced all the caps even thr good ones since they are 30 years old and hooked it up to my Jeeo and boom it came on :-) Only took an hour of my time and like 5$ in parts.

Shweet lol.. Anyone else have a broken overhead console then maybe you should just replace the capacitors and see if it works

Looking at the caps, did you replace 4 of them? Can I assume when you say crystal you are talking about the led display? Where did you get the crystal?

No the 4.00 mhz quartz crystal the silver rectangle thing above the caps top right.

I replaced every electrolyte capacotor except the lottle bottom left one which is a 4.7uf 50v. But i ordered those too and it should be in the mail. I also ordered 12 new buttons for the display and the lights. The buttons work but barely they had rubber boots on em that over decades of heat melted including on the lights.

Ill post pics when i repair thise too

In all i replaced 3x 100UF 35V caps and one 220uf 16v caps as well as one 100uf 6.3v capacitor. And the 4.0mhz quarts crystal which is the silver rectangle thing.

If i did have blown rectangle resistors. or ceramic caps. I would have ordered 100NF ceramic caps and simply repaired it from the back side of the board.

In my new pics

The caps that were blown however were the two 100UF 35v brown caps near the display on the top in the pic. The 220uf aka purple and 3rd 100uf 35v cap on the bottom were ok but being 30 years old i replaced all of em. You can also see in the back ground the golden colord cap i replaced as well which was good but capacitors are like 20 cents a peice. You can see the rectangle silver quartz crystal i replaced too.

You can order all these and the buttons from mouser.com i got all nichicon caps which were the originals

Thanks for the detailed response. I have a 98 cherokee with an overhead console that is working great. But, it’s nice to know how to fix it if I need to.

Thanks again

This is pretty cool. I wish I would have thought about that when I owned my '99 Cummins Ram. It's overhead console took a dump a little after I bought it and was always looking for a replacement.

Im not sure why they blew.. but it seems to be very common.. My guess is its a combination of the heat and from 20-30 years.

Electrolyte capacitors dont last forever.. eventually they dry out and blow up.. First signs of them going bad though is a slow charge hense why my working one was taking 5 min to come on. Have and LCD computer monitor where the wcreen would ripple when the cap was going bad and had to replace the bad cap.

Its not hard to do if you have a decent steady hand and take your time.

What do you use to desolder the old caps. I have an old siphen desoldering pen that I need to replace. I have to replace some caps on an old fisher amp. On a side note I put together a Nixie tube clock kit last year that had to be put together from scratch so I got good at soldering.

I just used my soldering iron and melted one pin and tilted the cap left and then went to the other pin and tilted it the other way and vice versa to get the old caps out. Basically wiggled it left and right melting the solder on the backside of the board

Same with installing the new ones then just cut off the extra pin since caps come with very long pins. I dont have a fancy soldering iron or vacuum. lol

hopefully the new buttons come soon. Both of my consiles the buttons stick or dont push right.. all the rubber buttons were stuck melted to the outaide push button. Also got some silicone comformant spray to coat the board after as i noticed a lot of the solder joints and pins were corroded from moisture over the decades.
