Rando Quarterpanel Question

Post by weeegoneeer »

Hey there!

Random question that been driving my NUTS. I see this all the time and can't unsee it.

Anyone know why the quarterpanels on GWs are often crooked? It's seriously almost every GW I see, mine included. Can't be that the rear crossmember is rusted out since it's on so many, including mine which has no rust.

Would also think that it can't be the body mounts because wouldn't they all compress at the same rate over time? Or is the tailgate so heavy that the rear mounts compress more quickly?

Here are 3 photos I pulled randomly from image search and mocked up to illustrate.

Anyway - just one of those things i don't have an answer for and is driving me insane.

Thanks for helping with this (my neurosis)!

Just your typical AMC build "quality".
In all seriousness, though. I think it's just the way the body lines are supposed to be.

Jon's right, it's how the body is stamped. The line isn't supposed to be straight. It's a lot more obvious without the wood grain.

Never seen a Wag with pink and blue lines before.

Hard to see what you're talking about with the editing. Maybe post the original pichers too.

Yup. Factory lines. The entire back of the Jeep curves downward. In fact, it isn't just the rear panel. The entire body line has an arc front to rear.

I drew a much smaller profile line on a straight side profile of a bare side Waggy.

It gives you a better concept of how the body line is an arc running the entire length of the Waggy.

Not uncommon on 60's vehicles. My 64 Belair has a similar profile.

Wow! Wonder why they made the body have intentionally curved lines. Good to know it's intentional and not something breaking down.

I'm a printer by trade, so am super sensitive to things aligning perfectly straight. My old, settling house drives me insane as well!

Thanks for the feedback guys, case closed. :)
