Hello from NC

Post by Mike_G »

Long time Jeep owner. I currently have a 2001 Cherokee and a 2015 Cherokee. In the past I’ve had a CJ 7, grand Cherokee, liberty and wrangler. I bought the 01 Cherokee with the idea of doing an overland/expedition style build. Has good bones ... no rust. However, I’ve been thinking of a vintage truck restoration or restomod. At first I was looking at ‘49-‘54 trucks and then I discovered the J10. Compared to other models the J trucks don’t seem to be very plentiful in NC. I found a 1981 J10 on Craigslist. (Photo attached) The asking price is $1,500 but the seller said he wants to get at least $1,000 out of it. I haven’t see it in person yet, but sounds rough. According to the seller frame has rust through on crossmember, cab has rust. Comes with a second cab that also has rust, from an older model J10 with brow. I was thinking of offering $500. I’m not too worried about welding in a new crossmember or patch panel here or there. My main concern is that there doesn’t seem to be a lot of aftermarket support for these. I like the idea of building an M715 inspired truck with a V8 and auto transmission, but I don’t wNt to get in over my head. My Cherokee would be pretty easy to do. An old Chevy or ford truck would be harder but lots of parts available. Is a J10 worth the investment in time and money?

I see potential there. I definitely like the stance on those steel wheels.

There’s a couple fsj yards in NC. Look on ifsja. Here’s one http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=183212

I say go for it.

Hello from NC, Go For IT! There is a M715 for sale on Craigslist in Wilmington, but the guy wants 3k for it I believe, You should be able to find a decent J Truck if that's what you want, build it like you want. Get up with the Carolina Full Size Jeep Club, http://www.cfsjc.com/CFSJC/About_Us.html
Not a lot of action on the board, but plenty of FSJ people that will give advise and are in the Carolinas. We also host the East Coast Invasion every June at Uwharrie which is a great time...

Is the $1,000 price on the Jeep in my original post fair? I offered the guy $500 but he went silent guess I pissed him off. It’s a 6 cyl., rusty and has no gas tank. There’s another in the same area that’s a ‘75. Rusty cab, homemade flat bed, Dana 44’s with 4:10 gears, th350 trans and Chevy v8 bottom half (seller said it spun a bearing so he harvested the top half). I can pick that one up for $650.

Unless I sell my Cherokee I need to try to get something for $1,000 or less

I'd jump on that Flat bed J truck. Hand him $500 cash. I bet he'd take it.
