Cabin Air

Post by HowardT64 »

Got a question. I notice that when I turn on the heater either cool or hot, not the A/C...it does not seem to come out quite as forcefully as it should. No noise coming from the blower, in fact it works well. My question is...could something be blocking the air flow?

Since the heater pulls air from the cowl the core can get blocked with debris. I think you can remove the inlet side of the housing from under the hood without having to access anything under the dash.

AC is a different fan from heat and defrost. The AC has a blower in the AC housing under the dash, and the heater blower is in the heater box under the hood. I'd expect the heater to be quieter than the AC, because of its location. True, the cowl vent is known for getting plugged with debris. This is especially bad at the floor vents, which tend to get packed full of stuff.

You should be able to see the squirrel cage spinning for the AC under the far right side of the AC unit under the dash.

Gotcha. Then I would say the fresh air vents and maybe the heater box are clogged with debris.

WOW!!! Ill have to check that out and see!! Holy crow....I think to avoid any further clogging, I was thinking of JB Welding, or better yet maybe velcro some metal screen under the vents where the wipers are...any thoughts?

The vent grate comes out, and you can lay a piece of hardware cloth in there to keep out the larger bits. No glue required.

Home Depot sells a fiberglass screen door mesh that you can put under the cowl vent cover. I cut mine to fit and let the cover screws keep it in place. I've been amazed at how much stuff it has stopped. Tons of leaves.

Do the motors go up and down in speed when you turn the knob ?

If not the relay on the firewall needs cleaning.. Mine would only blow one speed.. cleaned thst big relay on firewall in the engine bay and it worked so much better after.
