Need some help...

Post by HowardT64 »

Anyone in the Athens Texas area who could help me with a small job? I am healing from back surgery and need my Power steering unit replaced. I have the unit and fluid, just need someone to replace the existing unit. I cannot afford to pay a huge amount but can pay some :)

Jeep is running well otherwise :)

You do need a special puller for a P/S pulley swap. Store should have a rental unit. Just go slow and try not the bend the pulley.

Note the word "special". Don't try to use one that grabs the pulley. The special one grabs the hub. Harbor Freight sells one if the parts store doesn't have it.

I would recommend replacing the high pressure steering hose as well as the return line (regular transmission hose) while you're there.

I'd also recommend healing up a bit, as you have to contort yourself to get to the bolts on the back of the PS box and crawl underneath to remove the lower ends of both hoses.

X2, there is a bit of twisting and cursing, the fittings are hard to reach, and it is a mix of standard and metric... The HP hose o-ring that comes with the kit may not fit right or get crushed the wrong way. This spring it took me 3 tries to get a leaky free fitting. I used an AC green o-ring.

Remember to drain the PS fluid, use a turkey baster fitted with a small 1/4 hose to reach the side and drain the fluid... I installed a PS fluid filter as well on the return line because after my 2 tries there was still dust of hose bits floating in the PS fluid.

As a reminder, like trany fluid, PS fluid should be replaced every 30K, my PS pump became very quiet after the first fluid drain...

let me find the PS hose green o-ring size

This was my leaky o-ring -which is not an o-ring, installed by PO.

and what I used on the left side, IIRC, the green is a bit smaller, but did not get destroyed upon reinstallation like the one provided with the HP hose, seen in the picture below

And on a final note, make sure that the leak is from the pump, not the hose(s)
