All front D44 brake caliper brackets equal?

Post by jpswapmohn »

I received my J20 front axle already disassembled. I have finally cleaned it up and am having it rebuilt. As I went through the parts, I have one front caliper bracket that appears to be J20 and one that looks like J10/Wagoneer. The second one is less substantial.
While I would like symmetry and all, the seller doesn’t have the other bracket. Can I use J10 or Wagoneer brackets? I don’t think the odds are in my favor of finding another J20 bracket without buying someone’s axle..

I need to get something to the shop that is rebuilding it for me soon.

Left is J20. Right appears to be J10/Wagoneer
Thanks

Those plates are different for a J20, as are the caliper brackets. J20's are 8 lug and have larger front rotors.

I am pretty sure the left one is the J-20 bracket. It appears that both have the same spacing between the caliper mount bolts. The left bracket is now with the axle in NC while the right one (which I assumed was the wrong one) is here in VA.

I have the JB7 upgraded calipers in the garage. If they will mount to both, does that mean both will work? I know there is a potential for lateral spacing.

Maybe I will have to go hunting for a set from a K20.
Anyone know if a set from a wagoneer will work with the 3/4 ton calipers/rotors?

The 6 bolt pattern for the dust guard is the same I think, as you can swap 6 lug to 8 lug outers (I was referencing the brake rotors, caliper brackets, and pads above). But the J20 3/4 ton front did have larger rotors, which would require a larger shield. But maybe its not enough to matter? Its certainly worth trying.

Well, I am not sure if someone happened upon this post and saw opportunity, but a set of J20/K20 front caliper brackets popped up on eBay. It hurt my feelings to pay the asking price, but I found no aftermarket options. Will be anxiously waiting for their delivery.

They both look like the left bracket.

The important thing is that the 1/2 ton bracket is .5" shorter. The 3/4 ton bracket allows the use of a 1" larger rotor. I dont think a 1/2 ton bracket will allow you to run the larger rotor.

I figured somebody would know the exact size difference. I knew they were larger, just wasn't sure how much.

I have found 3/4 ton brackets. I would never have guessed that they were in such demand. I may end up with a second set (had multiple leads out at same time..)

FWIW, I installed Chevy JB7 brakes on the stock J20 brackets and everything went together just fine.
