I just sold my 79 CJ5 and I've decided to move up the 'food chain' to a 1979 Cherokee Chief. Only problem is the only one I could find that I could afford and wasn't a complete basket case was down in the Austin, TX area. So I had a buddy drive down from Ft Worth to check it out, and in turn, buy it for me. So, I now own a 'new' Cherokee that's about 1000 miles away sitting on a trailer, waiting for me to pick her up. All this got me to thinking, how far other FSJ owners are willing to drive for the right deal/truck?
So, that's a long-winded answer to my Topic Question. 1000 miles for me.
I'm looking forward to exchanging FSJ stories with everyone!
I drove four hours to get my J10. And the seller actually drove an hour an a half to make my drive a bit shorter. Drove it home with only 2 of 4 gears working (2nd and 4th) and a carb that was constantly loading up. But it was an adventure.
Not too far. the first one i looked at was like an hour ina half away. the one i bought was maybe 45 min away. Oddly i bought it when i was done test driving it (we met in a shopping center and there was a white grand wagoneer like 30 feet away lol.
I made the owner deliver it to my house though as i refused to drive it with his plates or no tags because if i got pulled over i could get in trouble like that

flew to Phoenix, rented u-haul, drove to Show Low, AZ. put J10 on dolly and drug it 2100 miles to Richmond, VA..
and i, too, was a fool. enjoyed the truck, but it was nothing as had been advertised. Was a good adventure, though. And i met a few folks along the way.
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

16 hours, don't recommend. Had a cashier's check in my pocket and driving that long to pick something up makes it so you're more likely to drive home with the new ride. Should have kept looking for a few months - had rust problems.
Got to spend some time improving the mechanicals though, which was fun & wound up in my new GW - so not all was lost!
well if it means anything.. I had to drive 2 hours away almost for my first fsj i looked at which was a 91.. (rusted badly and hidden with shiny black paint all over underside.)
and 2 hours away is maybe 100 miles. or so this was the first wagoneer ive ever driven or seen or been in person.
my 90 i bought maybe 2 weeks later.. It was about 50 miles away. However prior to me the owner bought it from west virginia on ebay and had it shipped so it originally was like 700 miles away.
after owning this Jeep its shame.. because it sold in 2010 on ebay that owner repainted it and it was in great shape.. and from a 7 year time spa the other two owners took terrible care of it and it statted to turn into a rusting hulk with electrical problems.
thankfully i bought it. ive spent 4-5k $ in cash so far and a year in half of time restoring it

I bought one a town over for a buddy of mine. He drove out to WA state from Chicago to get it and trailer it back. Roughly 2100 miles.
I picked mine up in Eau Claire, WI when I lived in the Chicago area. So about 280 miles personally. I drove mine back, though. In a snow storm.

I bid on one last week (eBay) that was 1200 miles away. Fortunately, I had a car guy/friend who could check it out for me - only 30 minutes away from it. I was thinking the drive home could be really interesting. Didn't end up with it, though. Too bad, it was a beaut!
