The engine will take WAY too long to warm up. And never will get fully up to temperature in most cases.

The thermostat helps the engine run at a more consistent temperature. This is important for overall tuning.

Not to mention should you drive at speeds over 40MPH for a time, the engine will slowly overheat because the coolant is passing through the radiator too fast to dissipate heat.

If it's passing through the radiator to fast to dissipate heat isn't it passing too fast through the engine to absorb heat?

Because it never gets the chance to cool down either. It's that double edge razor you were always told to not play with.

If you are running too hot, it is OK to remove the t-stat for trouble shooting and hopefully to get you home. That said, I have run for months at a time in the summer without one on my 401. Definitely need it in the winter so you can get warm air from the heater/defroster and not build up condensation inside the motor.

I was just thinking about this again... I had a 65 Rambler wagon w/232 in the late 80s and early 90s when I lived in SW FL. The radiator was pretty gunked up at one point and I pulled the t-stat and ran without it for around 2 years. It made it possible to run a little above the normal operating temp (185-195) instead of boiling over. I didn't even have coolant in it. The hell freezes over of 89 thrashed what was left of the radiator.

hi, i have installed a shroud but temperature is still above normal temp (needle in the middle of the dash indicator), may be it is because there is no t-stat or may be because the shroud is too deep ?

I like your shroud, is that one of the universal sheet metal ones? I tried to install the 5" version on mine but it was too wide, should've measured...

I don't think you're running hot if the needle is past the middle of your gauge. My understanding is the on the older rigs only tells you when it's warmed up. Mine runs about halfway between middle up to all the way right and it's never concerned me. I've never had signs of overheating at all.

My cooling system is on top shape too - recored original radiator, new water pump, new stock t-stat, flushed block, fresh coolant, etc.

It sounds to me like your 327 is running where it should unless you're seeing signs of overheating of course.

i have installed a 5" universal shroud on the upper side and a 3" on the lower side, so it it makes a round shape. i had to recut them to proper side, cos there was tricky to make them fit in this small area. it wasn't so hard in fact, but not easy too
