What paint for bare metal skid plate?

Post by jpswapmohn »

I have searched here and the interwebs..
I have a new skid plate for the mutt. It came to me in bare metal. Of course it has some light surface rust on it.
I am not too concerned about its beauty..just want it protected before i bolt it to the frame rails.

I am looking to just knock the rust off with a scouring pad, then prime and paint.

What is your recommendation for best primer and paint for this application? I prefer something pretty tough and that i can occasionally reprint as it gets scraped up.

Rustoleum Hammered says it requires no primer or rust removal.. is this a good option?

Maybe a simpler question would be: what primer and paint do you use on axles and such?

Thanks
One day I will wake up and realize that my jeep is complete...one day, I just know it.

The simpler question: Rustoleum Hammered or (Hammorite, same stuff from what I can tell) with no primer. There's nothing you could coat with that will stand up to sliding along a chunk of granite, so quick, cheap and easy touch-ups are where it's at.

Unless you drive in corrosive conditions, leaving it bare metal to get a solid coat of rust will provide you with years of service without problems. The factory enamel worked very well and anything beyond that can only help. It really depends on the conditions.

I tend to use a coat of self etching primer followed by a top coat of rustoleum industrial enamel. Fairly tough for resisting regular wear and easy to touch up when you drag it on a rock.

When I worked for U-haul we would use this chassis paint from NAPA and it was some tough stuff when it cured.

I sure do hope you're joking. OP, I'd use Corroseal or something similar.

I would just spray bomb with barbeque black, and then touch it up if develops any scrapes or scratches. The TruValue spray paint is a good value. As mentioned, when paint on steel meets rock, rock will win. Your skid plate should wear gouges like a medal of honor.

NO, there are many places beside the swampy humid areas where metal doesn't rust through. Instead, it gains a fine iron oxide coating and stays that way.
I've found Model T fenders in the desert that cleaned up perfectly. This is why I qualified my comment. Try to pay attention.

i can promise that Virginia and NC are not those types of places..
I picked up some self etching primer and hammer rustoleum spray.
Hopefully I will get a chance to prep a little and spray bomb it this week.

On a similar note, PO of the J20 axles I bought painted the hubs in JD green tractor paint. How do I get it off, or prep to paint over it? Not real keen on bright green hubs on my rig..

That JD paint is serious enamel and is tough to remove. I would mask it and use black implement paint.

i live in northern va i can agree the entire vehicle gets moist out and inside at night and morning.

fyi try the rustolium rust reformer.. im serious that stuff is hard as BEEP to get off.. I painted my rusted frame in the rear with 3-4 coats of it and rust hasnt come back and its been a year ina half now. On top of that when i needed to weld i used a wire wheel ona drill to clean the paint off.. and it wouldnt come off i had to use a chemical to melt it off
