I have a chance to buy an 81 J10. It's six cylinder with an auto tranny. Has 80k original miles and it's a step side bed. Hasn't run in over a year and half. What's the value of one of these? I don't really have any use for it but was considering flipping it.
I assume you think the value here will be in making it run and drive, and flipping it then.
"Step side" those years is officially "Sport Side." They have fiberglass fenders. Automatic and 258 will be under powered for most buyers. Depends on what somebody will pay for it. On the one hand, it's a Sport Side, which is a comparatively desirable model. On the other, it's a 258 with an automatic, and the market for J-trucks is pretty sparse. I paid $2000 for my rust-free Arizona J20 five years ago. I thought it was a lot of truck for the money, but the seller was having a hard time getting rid of it. Book value of J-trucks is really low compared to Wagons and CJs - I recall the state assessed sales tax on $1200 for the J20, and $6000 for my CJ-6, and they both cost the same.
They are oddballs in the car world, and there aren't a lot of buyers.

they want $1k for it. It just needs a fuel pump to run. chances are it won't pass smog here in CA and I don't want to deal with that. Thanks for the input guys.

No smog is real $ killer, it's a parts truck.
Plan on a whole lot more than a simple fuel pump if you expect to flip it.
I restored that exact kind of truck last year and sold it for just $10k. So even in nice condition they're not worth much. But if you don't want it I may be interested. Smog in California is a killer, but I don't have smog in Utah.
