Mileguard Oil Filter - Have ADD? Just read the bold.

Post by dueselfabrication »

First, let me say, I'm a complete advocate of doing as many things as you can yourself. I'm not afraid to get dirty, anything I can do myself, I'll do it. I will tackle anything, with certain exceptions, as will be outlined below.

Tire mounting: I have no idea how to do this, I find no shame in having this done for me.

Exhaust: I am not set up for welding, and bending pipe is not happening either.

Oil changes: I like going to the insta-lube (made-up name) to get my oil changed because they will grease all my fittings, wash my windows, and dispose of the oil right away for me. THe clincher, aside from working at a Valvoline in high school, I really like the convenience of the service, particularly when it's on a rig that leaves its' vitals as it travels about. Between oil changes, I figure I stop in two or three times to get that extra quart of oil and transmission fluid.

I went to the local shop this morning, and they couldn't figure the filter for my 1973 360. They refused to pull a filter for a 1990 Grand Wagoneer to just eyeball if it is the same thing, which I respected; also the guy in the pit greased my driveline anyhow, which I needed. What filter will I need to tell them to use next time? For now, since my driveline is greased, I'm going to drain, fill, and re-filter it in the driveway. (See, I'm not scared!)

In other news, going there was the first time I got the thing over 50. WOW! Now, I cannot wait to get the exhaust plumbed and take it further than a few miles. I think I'm going to buy BJ's y-kit for the 74-78 Wagoneer and have Midas modify it. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hope you're all having a great weekend. I'm off with the Mrs. to meet her friends for "Brunch" - which is really just lunch that will take up all the productive hours of the beautiful day outside. That discussion may be better in another
section of the board, and - as always - sorry I write so much. :D

1973 Wagoneer - still not sure why, but since it's here it's going to be cool.

If the engine is original, the filter of my choice is NAPA 1258. Sometime around 80-81, they changed to a metric thread pattern so the spec for 1990 will not fit a 73.

Enjoy the brunch. 8-)

Yeah, I also use Napa filters, for everything.

Ahh, thank you all! Good to know. Pre 80's filter, cool.

I have no idea if it is the original motor, for that matter, so I will just get my own filter, and have to buy my own top-off fluids. So much for saving a buck or two!

Be aware that the later models had a METRIC filter thread on them. (1988 and up, or so.)

O'Reilly's says that the same filter for a 73 AMc 360 will also fit a 1980 FSJ AMC 360, FWIW.

I ended up getting a Purolator (sp?) from the parts store and did it myself. They had a special on Penzoil Synthetic, so I got two big jugs, used most of it in the LJ and the last with some regular oil for the Wagoneer.

I prefer doing oil changes myself. It gives me a chance to examine the undercarriage and if the oil plug gets stripped out, at least I know the guy to rant and complain to. :D

That is right. It was around 88 for metric, not 80-81. :)
