Cruise control

Post by custom76 »

I am considering resurrecting this on my 76, The po evidently tossed everything when they did the Edelbrock 4 barrel conversion except the main command module which is still bolted to the fender well.

I have searched the manuals online and cannot find a diagram for this, only the eletrical schematics. Anyone know where I can find these?

What issues will I have with the Edelbrock carb?

Thx

There is no diagram that I am aware of. It's a pretty simple system, Control on turn signal lever, transducer under the hood (on fender) and vacuum bellows on manifold, a couple vac hoses and a ball chain link from the bellows to the carb. I have a Holley Street avenger carb on my Cherokee and the Cruise works fine, no mods were needed. I did find the cruise relay (under dash) was bad and they are no longer available, but a regular 4 pin relay works just fine.
I start what I finish.

You might try looking at the '82 manual online at OlJeep.com ... IIRC there is a chapter about the cruise control (assuming it's more or less the same 1976 to 1982).

The '80s system is different than the '70s system. You sound like you are missing the bellows that is bolted to the intake manifold with the beaded chain that connects to the throttle lever. A vacuum hose from your vacuum "ball" goes to the "M" port on the control box and then one from the "S" port goes to the diaphragm.
The only issue you may have with the Edelbroke carb is finding a place to hook the beaded chain to the throttle lever.

You are probably better of, cost and time wise, to just get an aftermarket cruise control system.
1977 Cherokee S, Ford 5.0, 5 speed, BW 1356, 33 x 10.50 BFG's. No longer my DD.
2007 Mercury Milan, 2.3L, 5-speed, now my DD. 29 mpg average.
