Fuel Tank Leak 83 Wagoneer Limited

Post by 83Wag »

Greetings,

New member here. Discovered leak coming from top of fuel tank. Have not dropped it yet. Went searching for replacement tank. BJs says nobody makes replacements any more (except for a non-standard big thingy).

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

The usual culprits are cracked tank fittings and/or hoses. Sometimes the rollover valve or vent fittings crack but there are replacements available. Your 83 should have several fuel and vent lines and it's common for them to crack over time. There is a filler and filler vent hose going to the tank that like to crack and leak where they pass over the frame crossmember.
Beware that dropping the tank is an interesting procedure. Once you drop the skidplate and lower the tank a bit, you will have to disconnect all the hoses and sending unit wire. If you pull up the carpeting in the rear cargo area you will see a round cover that you can remove to gain access to the sening unit and hoses--which makes getting those loose much easier. This often requires a long reach in cramped spaces to get to the clamps. Jackstands or a hoist are a must for this job.
Also, there is a plastic insulating pad between the tank and skidplate that is often soggy and nasty. You may need to locate new padding before re-installing the tank.
A leaking tank is actually fairly rare after Jeep went to the plastic ones on the later models.

Wow. Thanks so much for all that.

If it's a bad tank, any suggestions?

I have two OEM tanks available and I also have a Mount/Skid plate. Asking $99 for a tank not including S&H. These tanks do crack in the COLD climates.
Mount/Skid is $199 with free shipping East of Mississippi
