Rear seat belts?

Post by Dave145 »

I have a '79 cherokee chief. I have the original folding rear seat in it as well. I've been told that I need seat belts back there in order to be considered legal. Did my Jeep ever have rear seat belts on that seat? If so, how many were there (2 or 3)? Also if it did have them, where did they mount to?

It should have 3 seat belt, two on the side and one central. Behind the seat there should be two holes on the floor, where the bolt goes that keep all the central seat belts parts (central seat belt plus the two side belt).

Hmm I'll have to take a look at that this afternoon... Also is there a way to keep the seat from folding up while I'm driving? I mean that I can open it and it stays down, but when I hit a bump it bounces up...was there ever a lock or something back there to keep the seat down while I'm driving?

I was thinking that or maybe magnets to keep it down without people on it.

A 79 should have a locking mechanism for the rear seat, on the passenger side. It should fully latch when you put the seat back all the way up.

Zack from Z&M Jeeps has developed a shoulder belt kit for the rear seat of a Wagoneer.
I am sure they would work on a Cherokee as well

Yep, and you can do your own too.
I used belts out of the front of some big '70's Buick, well, back when I had a rear seat.
There are captive nuts up above the headliner about 4-5" behind the rear seat.
I had to fab a couple of backing plates where they go into the rear fender areas but it was comforting to know folks were in there securely.
