Thanks for some helpful pointers, I was able to get Part 1 of 2 complete on my troubleshooting "broken hood release cable" problem for my 1987 Woody. I popped the plate, but only the passenger side of the hood releases. Driver side stays completely shut. Any pointers or recommendations? I can't get the hood completely up to do a battery charge. Thanks

Use a screw driver to release it from the front. Find the plate that is attached to the cable and puts on it.... pop. Hood should open. If it does not push down on the hood and try again.
So despite repeated attempts, I am only getting the passenger side to "comply" with my hack into the plate. That side pops up, the drivers side does not. Any other suggestions?! Thanks!

You need to somehow get a good flowing lube and not grease in to that side. You need to push the bar that holds the cable back enough to disengage the pins.
