J Truck headliner colors?

I just picked up a replacement head liner for the Honcho since mine has a major sag.



I've only seen a handful of J trucks in person but all of them have had this same tan/cream colored headliner - regardless of interior color.

Was the cardboard only headliners only made in tan? Did the Jtrucks come with fabric colored head liners?


I'm pretty sure the sun visors on the Twister movie trucks were black, but there is not a good shot of the headliner. Seems like a black headliner would be a bit much, but black visors with a tan headliner might look a bit wacky...

My 79 was two tone brown interior, but the headliner was that same cream color. Just checked my 77 with red interior, also has a cream headliner.

Looks like shadow to me.

Check the parts catalog. The available colors will be listed there.

IIRC my '77 with a black interior is cream-ish, and the '82 with a tan interior was too (I repaired and repainted it).

That's what I thought at first too, but I think the giveaway is the textured metal trim channel that the headliner sits in, its would be tan and sits right above the door in the lighter area. It looks very much black in that screen shot.

here's another one that shows light reflecting off what looks like a gloss painted cardboard liner.



I'm not thinking it was a factory color, it could have either been painted when they found it on the used car lot or decided it needed to be darker during production.

That and just the general curiosity if they really all came in only one color.

Mmm ok. Maybe your screen is better than mine, or you're in a darker room. All I see is dark. However, HH's thumb may be overlapping the headliner - thumb is visible, behind it is dark. I suspect they painted the headliner to provide more contrast to the actors faces.

BTW flat latex exterior house paint works great on these. Don't know if you can get black, but very dark gray is definitely available.

When I grabbed a pair of black visors off a junk Cherokee, I also got the factory black channel off it just in case.

Ok, in 1979 they were "Flax" in two types, with or without the extra insulation package & "Limited" model. Prior to that they were all "Plantation White" (this is what my '77 has). In 1980, the model 25 (SWB J10) came in black and beige. '81 on (as best I can determine) they came in Almond, Beige, Honey, Black and Blue. The first three were also available with "extra quiet insulation," or not.

I expect the Twister Jeep has a black factory headliner, since the seat back looks black in the picture above.

I just installed a headliner I ordered from eBay ID: smsheadliners item number: 172609423007
it was an exact fit for my 1986 J20, and the "Sand" color was an exact color match to the original headliner. I had just a metal roof in there, but I found the original headliner fabric under the sun visor center clip. The "Sand" color really brightened up the interior
