Valve seal step 1, spring compressed , then "DONE"

Post by letank »

Aaaack, put the rope in the cylinder, move to TDC, compressed the valve springs.... bang, bang, wiggle.... the keepers are stuck... or ... never done it.... probably missing a step, the springs are stuck to the keepers... bigger hammer....

BTDT? I guess the rope is supposed to push the valve up, cannot rotate the crankshaft anymore... cannot pull the rope... so it is all compressed...

Assuming the mothership is still alive and you can get to the tech articles...I wrote one for exactly what you're doing, with rope and that type valve compressor, about 15 years ago!

Wrap assembly with a rag so you don't loose keepers. Hit top bolt with a hammer. If you do it without the rag, the keepers will fly away! I always tap the valve spring top with a socket and extension to knock them loose before I compress them.

Having a small magnet close helps. ;)

Thank you for all the good words, yes BFH on top rules on. The small magnet and the tweezers to retrieve the keepers, the mothership tech is still up... but knowing where to strike was the key.

The stem seals are loose.... later you can admire the spark plugs electrodes... amazing that the engine still started at the first push of a button, TFI rules.

pffft, a long but rewarding job, no leaks or major dripping, does not smoke on restart, this is the best.

And yes there were no gasket on either valve cover only a real thin bead of silicon, the valve stem seals were shot on # 8, 5, 7, major oil caking, and bad on #4,6, and good on the rest, #1 being perfectly dry.

I used the rubber/composite gasket with a nice bead of silicon.

Thank you for the help.

Added more pict for refs, the left bank before starting, note the oil soaked rearward rockers.

And the spark plugs for the little history, 10Kmiles 6 years, and it was firing at first try withing a 1.5 to 2 seconds.
