Re: Reproduction FSJ interior panels survey

A day after abdominal surgery I went out to the 'Workspace' aka: SunRoom and did my first full section pressing.
I didn't get the distinct and sharp lines I was hoping for, but suppose it's because I changed from scrim to foam. The stamp works as expected but I need more pressure before I am satisfied enough to put my name on it.

It's been many months of trial, failure, changes and more effort to get to this point and I admit I am pleased.

Here's the result of today's efforts:

I wanted to do another pressing today but I'm not feeling so good.
Thanks NG! I am hoping the next one will be better.

Loving your work. I'd be interested in a set of door panels.

Also, that seat for the honcho looks amazing! Any idea how similar those Honcho seats are to the XJ/TJ seats? I can't find the original seats anywhere.

Thanks!

I recall the Honcho highbacks were CJ-7 seats.

I've pulled it out of 76 and 77 models but have seen it in other years as well. Of course, it could have been transplanted.

Finally I can provide an update.
After several failures with the stamping process I tossed the stamps and started over. The next hurdle was sorting out the process and materials.
After giving up several times I have it figured out.
The image below shows a test stamping I did yesterday and it was gratifying to see sharp lines, perfectly formed gill ribs and even dimensions everywhere.

Now that I've got this part sorted, I'm ready to make an entire panel.
I'll come back with an update soon.

Finally after yet more time spent on making templates, fixtures and a re-design of the press...

This is the first full panel attempt. I am concerned about alignment between the ABS backer board, foam and vinyl, but won't know until tomorrow when I pull the press off.

I was twiddling my thumbs and talking to myself for 8 hours then I said Skrewit, I gotta know.
The only harder jeep door panels are the late 60s, early 70s with all those lines.
This one goes into the win column.
Night all!

Thanks guys.
I'm not too thrilled with the vinyl so I've got to source something better before doing another.
The flat faux leather provides great detail but doesn't look anywhere close to the factory look so I am stalled until I find what I'm looking for.

Guessing leather (or pleather?) Is to expensive for trial and error? Probably isn't any easier to work either.

Looks great to me! If you ever do the older panels I'd be very interested in a pair or two.

Quality Leather goes for 149.00 per half hide which will do one full panel, plus it takes a large die to emboss.
I think I'll save that for the GW seats and use the high quality vinyl on the door panels.
