Engine search begins! HALP

Post by memsiej »

Sister and her husband are looking for an engine to replace the one that pooped out on its drive from Seattle to Montana.

It's a 1984 Jeep Grand Wagoneer and I'm searching hopelessly for a list of what engines can be most easily put into this beast AND where to even start finding some engines. As of now they just have one mechanic out in Montana 'keeping an eye out' for any engines he comes across but I'd love to help expedite the process.

ANY info/leads appreciated :)

Why not fix what you have?

If you want to buy a used engine, post in the WTB (want to buy) forum here and on the other Jeep sites. You may be able to find a good engine at a junkyard using car-part.com Or call your local big junkyard and ask if they can find a good used engine for you.

"List of engines?" Any AMC 304 or 360 or 401 - from an AMC car or Jeep - would work in this car. You'd need to use the flexplate that matches the engine displacement. If you use a different displacement or much different year, details of the engine will be different and your mechanic would have to handle that. The Chrysler 360 used in some Grand Cherokees and in Chryco cars is completely different, so stay away from those. Other engines from a different manufacturer (an "engine swap") will be a big and expensive project requiring custom fabrication and welding that you probably won't want to take on.

Thanks for the link! Emailed that place in MT.

As for why, there's another thread getting into the whole mess. Basically, I picked up and restored this Jeep for my sister who lives in Bozeman. The drive to MT, however, seems to have killed the poor thing. I live in WA and am not near to help with the project, and she or her husband are not super adept at mechanical work (definitely not engine rebuild). The shops around the area have given multiple conflicting reports about what works, what doesn't and if we can pick up an engine it'd just be easier for them to swap it out at this point then to keep taking it to mechanics, hearing a bunch of different 'this is broken- no this is broken- no THIS is broken not THAT- and having to start over so often.

S&J engine remanufactures your 360 for about $1700 plus shipping which is about $50-100. Has a ten year 100,000 mile warranty. Be like new again. Took less than two weeks to ship it there, have it done and back to me.

Dang. Looks like they actually sell remanned engines for $2000 (after core charge) with a great warranty on it. And they're in Spokane- right between WA and MT. Perfect.

They didn’t have any cores when I had mine done. I pulled it, ratchet strapped it on a pallet, they ordered freight pickup and it was back to me in 12 days. I spent another several hundred on overkill goodies, but it was $1700 for a stock reman job.

Haha, I think I just replied to your thread over on IFSJA about this. Looks like that is two referrals for S&J, but you can also try to reach out to SC/397 over there, he does some nice rebuilds, one of his recent threads is here http://www.ifsja.org/forums/vb/showthread.php?t=186633

I have an S&J in mine and no problems in the 3-5000 miles I've driven it.

Huh. Like they had no engines ready to roll so they reworked yours once you sent it to them?
$1700 to get that jeep good to go would be well worth it IMO at this ponit
