Jeep still stinks of exhaust months after new cat

Post by candymancan »

I got a magnaflow cat like what almost a year ago ? And i noticed it smelled of rotten eggs or gun powderor sulfur when i got it... was told itd go away.. well its been like 5k miles now and the exhaust still stinks... but not of sulfur or rotten eggs.. but of just old car exhaust..or kinda like what motor cycles smell like.. just heavy exhaust fumes.

I think it smelled like this with my old busted up honey comb cat as well. No smoke out the exhaust. No oil burning. I dont think it runs rich the plugs are clean.. in fact i gatta use 93 as it pings on 87 or 89 so i probly got high compression from carbon build up or the timing needs adjusted.

Gas mileage is 11to 12mpg as well.

Is it normal for these engines to have a stinky exhaust ?

Check all your vacuum lines.

Sounds like you are running lean (Being lean can also cause pre-ignition). Pull a few plugs, see if they are white.

Well the egr is blocked. Stock hat i removed for an open air hat to clear up the vacuum lines.. all the lines are run properly to the ctos. The air pump i removed as only one manifold had functioning tubes the others were welded.

So basically the emission stuff is renoved short of the charcoal canister ect. Vacuum lines are all nee and routed properly. The jeep runs great 1 or 2 pumps it starts right up. Doesnt stall. Never has hard starting even in the winter.. Idles good.. It just smells and pings on lower octane fuel

Would running lean tjough cause a smelly exhuast fyi exhaust stunk before i removed all the emission stuff and plugged the egr ( egr doesnt work anyway thats why i plugged it it was causing the engine to stall) And i read removing the egr causes the pinging i have with 87 or 89 and timing has to be adjusted.

Removing the EGR causes pinging because it enriches the fuel mixture. If you didn't retune the carb correctly after removing it, you're running lean.
