I recently bought a 71 (J4000) Gladiator that has been basically restored and (over) lifted but has some issues. It runs great and will drive great once I deal with the front suspension. I am not sure if the work was done on the cheap or what but I am running into a few things that are beyond my limited (but always improving) skills....
Front suspension issue has been explained to me and I hope to find a set of leaves for the front that will eliminate a least one sin of the PO: lift blocks on the front axle :ymsick:
Another concern is a complete lack of environmental controls. Since the blower switch is broken (known upfront before the purchase), I have sourced a control panel for the dash board. But since the ducting is in a box of parts, I am pretty sure that there is nothing for this system under the dash.
Can someone send me pics of set up that controls the flapper in the heater box please? I cannot tell if the cable (?) is routed inside the dash or along the firewall. I also am unsure of what is there as far as the electrical part of this system. I fear this fix may be something I have to have done since electrikery is beyond me.
Pics and advise here greatly appreciated! Pics to: tandcp1966 AT yahoo.com
Thanks!!

Yeah, lift blocks are bad. Talk to Hell Creek Suspension about getting some proper lift springs. If you have blocks in back as well, I would ditch those as well and replace them with lift springs as well.
For the environmental side of things. I can easily get photos of that on my J10 as I dont have a glove box box. But I am not sure how much that changed from '71 to '81. But they may be similar.
Yup, already stated, Lift Blocks are bad.
Not only are Front Lift blocks bad, IMHO, they are dangerous.
I am happy that you have come to the correct understanding of lift blocks and want to change.
Hellcreek is one the only complete lift spring kit manufacturer that produces a product for your year and model of rig.

Welcome Tim,
I'll try to grab you some pic's of the heater cable routing from my '70 when I get back from shock shopping.
A collection of 1966 to 1986 parts. Self Inflicted Flesh Wound

From the bracket on the heater box it goes through a grommet on the fire wall, just to the left of the glove box area.
I have a glove box so no way to get a pic back there.
I have 9 million wires under the dash in the way for pic's but it just casually works it's way over the steering column to the control panel.
Hope that helps a little.

Thanks for the pic! Now that I remove my head from my nether region I realize that it is a typical sheathed cable. That makes that part of this process much easier.
Now to figure out the electic.
Are there vacuum hoses as well?
Thanks!!

Welcome! You'll find some wiring diagrams at the link provided that should help some. You might be able to find a service manual on the net, or by getting in touch with Zack at http://stores.zmjeeps.com/StoreFront.bok
I didn't see a link for a vacuum diagram at Tom's sight, so best of luck there.
Actually, after some thought, I don't care if the air is able to be directed out the vents. I only need it to keep the windscreen from fogging up so will not worry about the vacuum lines.
Thanks!
