The avatar size is 100x100, which is what most forums use. A very few use 125x125. The max file size is 10KB, which is plenty for an image of that size.

What are you using to create your avatar? Most any basic photo viewing/editing program can shrink an avatar to any size you want.

If anyone needs help with theirs I could adjust them for you with one of my photography programs. I'll just need the image, so I would need to be able to download them from photobucket or something or we could work stuff out in PMs/emails.

I increased the file size limitation to 15KB. Which I don't like doing as it means page load times get bigger, but if it makes it easier on you guys thats ok I suppose :)

OK, I must be doing something wrong. My computer says the pic dimension is 2272x1704. The size is 1.06MB. Another one I tried was 1.0MB. Tried about 5 so far. Not sure of their sizes though. Are those too big? How do I make them smaller? What am I doing wrong. :-\

Ok, the dimensions are waaaay too large.

Are you on a Mac or PC?

PC: Open the image in paint, and I think its the tool with the square looking icon, should be scale or the like. Click that make change the larger of the two dimentions to 100, the other will auto change. Then hit save as (Dont replace the original) and use that.

Mac: Open in preview, go to Tools, and adjust size. Again, set the larger of the two to 100. Hit Save As/Export As.

Make sure you save it as a jpg file.

Better yet, give this a try:

put the dimension as 100

OMG, only 2 hrs for me to get my avitar. That link is cool. Thanks for the guidance. I told you I...oh look something shiny. :ymsigh:

edit: I would have never figured it out without the link. Highly recommended for those who are computer illiterate like me.

I re-sized a pic of my 63 to 100x100 with Olympus Master, but the file size is 18.1KB. Is there any way to shrink that or would I have to go smaller with the pic size?

The size of the file depends on the original resolution. Most photo editing programs don't have the capability to drop enough pixels to make the file smaller.

When saving to a jpeg there should be an option to adjust quality. Set it to 70%, which is plenty for a small image.

I don't think the Olympus software will drop enough file size to make an avatar. I've tried in the past without success.

I struggled with the process too. Im not completely computer illiterate either. I must have had my resolution set pretty high on my camera when i took some of the pics i tried to use because even at 100 pixels, the file was too large. Are the guidelines for posting pictures the same over here? Size restrictions etc? Anyway to post those up as a sticky?

Size restriction and stuff can be seen on the upload avatar page.

A good, fairly simple program to use for editing images for avatars is FastStone Image Viewer. It is windows only so I can't help out the Mac people. I use Xee as an equivalent on my Mac, but not sure if it allows as much to be done like FS. I also have CS4/5 Master Suites for both machines so that is what I use when on the Mac.

FastStone lets you resize, crop, change quality, and a whole bunch more. It is free and is so much better for image viewing then the stock windows picture viewer as well. Might be something for y'all to test out and see if you like. If you need any help with it just ask. :-bd

Image

This is the last photo I tried to make an avatar out of. It's 14.6 MP.

Granted, I haven't used any true photo editing software (I've been too lazy), but I could only manage to drop the file size from 6.2 Meg to 28K. This is after downsizing to smaller than 100x100.

The key is the quality setting. When you save as a jpeg, there is typically a slider bar for quality. Adjust this down. With the image size being so small, you cannot see the difference. But it load far faster for everybody.
