J10 / Grand Wagoneer body compatibility

Post by Hendo2.5 »

Hi,

I have just bought a 1979 J10 that needs doors and a hood. I have found a 1980 Grand Wagoneer that I could pull parts from. Would the hood and doors off the Wagoneer fit properly on the J10?

Thanks

Hinges will not be the same but the door skins will match.

That might be a problem for me. Do the hinges not match because of the hinge itself or are they in different locations with mounting holes that don't match up? In other words will the Wagoneer door mount directly onto the J10 hinges? are there similar issues with the hood? Thanks.

I'm not sure that's true about the hinges. IIRC the latch changes somewhere in the '70s, but 1979 should be after that. You might get a better response in the stock FSJ technical forum ... that seems like the right place for this question.

Ok, looking at the parts book, there is indeed a change in the hinges 1979 to 1980. And the door shells have different part numbers, but the book does not describe the change in the door shell. 1979 does have the later horseshoe latches, used from then on. So it seems like 1979 is a tough year for doors ... go earlier and the latch won't match. Go later and the hinges are different. You need someone who's done this to tell you if the 1979 hinges will bolt on to the later doors.

The hinges and latches changed during the 79 model year. I have seen both styles on 79s. The hinge is not a big deal. The earlier ones swing the door open further. Swapping latches can be done but it is a little tedious.

This is a 76 Cherokee with an 81 driver door. I swapped the 76 latch and manual window mechanism into a door that had electric window.
