For Veterans/Service Members...

Post by tedlovesjeeps71 »

I have a couple things I wanted to bring to the attention of any you military guys, could be good to know.

First is pertaining to the GI Bill. Looks like the politicians have voted to approve a new version labeled "the forever GI Bill". The main positive talking point is it is (supposed to) going to remove the 15 year window of use or lose. That's not quite correct as it targets mostly those who have a purple heart. It also will only apply to those joining next year so no word on if it applies retroactively.
The bad is that they will begin reducing the BAH amount by $100.00 each year until around 2020. So if youre like me and rely on that money... Tighten your belts!

The second thing is about the VA. More specifically, the VA choice program. Somehow, the House of Reps Failed to approve a new funding bill for the choice program. What happens and how it effects those of us who have only found medical help through choice (due to the VA being a clusterchuck... Is yet to be seen. I'm worried and a little pissed off. After 2+ years of jumping through VA hoops and hurdles I only just began getting much needed treatment through the choice program. Now what happens?? Will my care stop? Will I have to go back to the VA to start over, wait in line for care that may not happen soon? I Freakin' hate this.
Just wanted to give you guys a heads up that changes are coming down the pipe.

I went to college on the GI Bill- I planned on going to school via satellite courses while I was in , but the 1st Gulf War came along and I just went when I got out.

The GI Bill is a very important and impactful benefit, if anything, it should be enhanced- more like it was set up for the GI's after WW2.

What a shame the politicians keep messing with the military and the veterans.

Sounds like they got an earful and managed to put a bandaid on the choice program... For now.

Deal reached to fix VA budget crisis after vets protest
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2017/07/28/de ... otest.html

It also sounds like they are funding it by taking from other veteran benefits?? Unless I'm reading this wrong?

"The proposal also would devote $1.8 billion to authorize 28 leases for new VA medical facilities and establish programs to make it easier to hire health specialists. That cost would be paid for by trimming pensions for some Medicaid-eligible veterans and collecting fees for housing loans."
