Pleased with my Waggy today

Post by dodgerammit »

When I first picked up Radio Flyer in January, it acheived a pathetic 9mpg. :( In comparison, my 85 Dodge W350 with 4.56 gearing, 4 inch lift, 33s, and the aerodynamics of a large barn nailed down a consistant 10.

After a tune-up, and some initial carb tuning, I managed to eek out 10mpg my last fill up along with losing the excessive smoke upon startup. She was running extremely rich. Picked up some smoother driveability as well.

After this was some more intensive tuning on the carb along with working out random idle issues due to a vacuum leak, I trusted the mechanicals enough to plink down $600 on a nice set of Kumho Roadventure AT51s in the 235 size a couple weeks ago.

Fast forward to today at the gas pumps. I had logged exactly 150 miles and was watching the counter on the screen add up. I was hoping for a bit better than 10. Maybe 11 mpg.

The pump kicked off at 11.3 gallons. "Hmmm, that can't be right." :geek: I depressed the nozzle handle and the pump once again kicked off. One more try confirmed, the tank was full. Out comes my phone so I can do a quick calculation.

13.25mpg! I was floored, but ecstatic. :o

Jeep on, fellas! :fsj:

Good deal! I am Interested to know what "more intensive tuning" is on a 2150 carb if that's what you have

Actually, mainly leaning the carb out, I bet the fuel screws were 5-6 full turns out. They are only 3 now. After that, it was tracking down an erratic idle issue which turned to be a loose vacuum hose. Tomorrow, I hope to get the MSD streetfire module installed, ditching the duraspark, and begin to clean up the plethora of vacuum hoses and simplify the system. Goal is 15mpg

Have been driving the Cherokee very much lately. About a thousand miles in the last three weeks. (In the process of moving to Sterling) and have been getting 14.5mpg with lots of interstate travel. I can break 15 if I don't even go above 70mph.

Nice. Gonna follow Redone's thread about ditching the duraspark system and timing adjustment once I get the MSD module hooked up. Gotta pick up a vacuum gauge today.

A lot of engine idle time installing msd module and making sure vacuum lines were hooked up and working. No additional timing done yet. Too busy with other things on it. Filled up today. 12.9mpg. So, it appears I have a solid, repeatable number to work from now.
