Any downside to using a thinner head gasket?

Post by Nikkormat »

Doing the math, spending $40 more dollars on head gaskets gets me Cometics that are .027 thick instead of the .056 thick felpros which also have a larger volume due to the increased bore size.

What am I missing here?

The piston is .026 in the hole at tdc, and the compressed thickness of the gasket is .027. So my quench height would be .053. Plenty right?

So with the thinner head gasket that should bump my compression ratio to 9.0:1 with 63cc cylinder heads. Or 9.4:1 with 58cc heads. Right?

How much power is a point of compression worth? I'll need premium gas right?

Desktop Dyno might give you an idea.

Curious to see what the gurus say.

I am thinking about popping up the compression to 9 or ~9.5 on my rebuilt 360 while dealing with other issues before it goes back in.

My pal Toby was running 10:1 and his 401 made ludicrous power but emissions was a nightmare, overheating was a struggle and I think he needed hi octane. 87? 91? Don't remember.
