What does the LT and LS in the series stand for?

Post by Snuffleupagus »

Does anyone know what the LT or LS in correlation to describing the motor itself.
A friend of mine contends that the LS stands for "Later Series". If that is so......What would the LT in LT series stand for?
On another site some folks claim it stands for "Luxury Touring" and "Luxury Sport"..........

Anyone know any different?
Just curious......

That is GM talk. I would need a universal translator to begin to understand what it is about... ;)

Back in the 60's it was Luxury Sport and Luxury Touring. But this was for car trims, not engines.

However now its just an engine code and nothing else. Typically the LS (Or LS-based)engines are used in RWD cars such as the Corvette, Camaro, CTS-V, etc. While the LT (and LQ) are truck engines used in Silverados, Tahoes, etc. But they are not acronyms.

In 99, only the LS series of small block engines were being produced, usually with iron blocks in the pickups/SUV lines and aluminum blocks in the passenger car lines (depending on if it's a performance model, Silverado SS for example, those lines get blurred a bit).

The 8.1L engines were produced for a few years afterward, not really a LS engine, and not a rat motor either.

As far as LS and LT trim levels, Brandon is on the money.
