Moab Spring 2014 (April 21 to 28 ish)

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

Dates may change but Jerry and I plan to be there the week after EJS.

Probably camp at the http://www.canyonlandsrv.com/ located in Moab.

This will be a casual trip; very much like other FSJ gatherings. No real plan, just have fun.

I will try to make it for a day trip this year. Poison Spider and Behind the Rocks are two of the first technical trails I drove when I was 17, on my own (no parents, I lived in GJ and lied and said I was just going to watch and check out the scene), and I haven't done either since.

For those who've never done the Moab EJS, you don't have to wheel to have a great time. I killed an entire weekend in my 20s, spending Saturday watching Lionsback and the dunes, then Sunday making hibachi burgers at Potato Salad Hill. So much rolls through Moab that week you could make a spectacle of it without ever leaving town. I was there when AHnold was pushing the H1 before it was called "the H1". I was there when Cappa chugged the bottle of mustard on a $20 bet, I was there the year after the brown K5 lost it's brakes and everyone said it would be the "last year because it's too dangerous". If you get bored with the the off road fun, year round it's the hiking/scrambling/mountain biking mecca of the US. Arches and Canyonlands are always awesome, and if you have kids, it's a great opportunity to explain what "phallic" means (you're bound to drive by a rock formation named that). I'm getting all nastalgic now so I'm going to hit post button.

Any firmer plans for this? Also, it took me a little doing to find this post. I expected it to be under Mountain events.

I think we are gonna be there on April 20th (yeah, looking at the Atlas Flint!) and will stay until the 28 (ish). I know my buddy (in a TJ) his wife and Jerry Cockran (in his Cherokee) are going as well.

We are planning to take both the Honcho and the Lexus. Will do some good rock crawling in the Honcho and are planning to hit the sand dunes in the Lexus.

Hoping a few FSJ folks will join us as well!

Canyonlands didn't have a cabin available, I need electricity. I am booked at the Slickrock Campground 4/20 - 4/26. I'm looking forward to my first visit to Moab!

What do you recommend I carry for spare parts? I've been blessed with a reliable vehicle but I know it's just a matter of time and the right rock.

What kind of FSJ are you bringing?

I carry a ton of spare parts. Everything from axle shafts to u joints, to driveshafts, to belts to fluids.

I may try to make it out but I am not confident I can get the 5.3L conversion done in time. If anything I may just pull the 5th Wheel out there and do a little camping. I will see if I can find any boondock camping spots. I wonder if I can get the 5th Wheel out onto Sand Flats rd without getting stuck? I have tented there a couple of times but I dont remember if I have seen campers there.

I just moved this to Mountain section and am a "maybe" for Moab in April.

Scott - all kinds of camper spots at Sand Flats.

I think you need to bring stuff such as axle shafts, u joints, drive shafts, spare QT parts, wheel bearings, fluids, belts, hoses, etc.

Pretty much bring anything you can and keep it all tied down and secure.

That way you won't break anything! :fsj:

I ran a well tuned Holley Truck Avenger carb in Moab without any problems. Stock carb will have problems with the angles.
