Spend an hour each night going through the questions and then pass the test that weekend. The Technician test is easy. We had a couple of 9 year olds ace the test at our last Test Session with the local club. I think they were Scouts and looking to get a patch or something. The little Handi-talkie radios are good for short range comms but if you want to really benefit from Ham radio out on the trail, you really need to get a mobile 2m/70cm rig installed in the Jeep that has APRS. I have a Yaesu FTM-400DR and the Kenwood TM-D710G is another popular APRS capable radio.
Of course if you really want to get out there, you need a General license to operate in the HF frequencies. On 40 meters with a good HF mobile and a NVIS antenna you could be somewhere in the Ouray mountain passes and dial up someone in Denver.

So my father is giving me his old Yaseu FT 227R. Some quick googling says it's a solid, if outdated, radio. But it's easy to work on and add things like a CTCSS tone board. I'll have to dust off my soldering skills but I think this will be a good vintage radio for Truck Norris.
