Memorial weekend 2016 - who wants to 'wheel and camp?

Post by AwesomeJ10 »

I usually camp at the Walden Colorado sand dunes for Memorial weekend, but I am thinking about doing something else.

Is anyone else interested in some 'wheeling and camping during late May?

I would be interested in anything in Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, etc (surrounding states).

What is going on?

We do a mini family reunion at the family cabin in Bailey every memorial day, but I was planning on taking the trail hawk up some of the trails West of 285 between Fairplay and Buena Vista unless the money badger is ready for a shake down.

I might be up for something. BTW I would think most of the passes off 285 will still be under snow. :/

True. The only one that may be open is Twin Cone. Other than that, one has to go south or west.

I have wanted to go do some exploring on trails south of Grand Junction.

Well at this point, we are thinking about loading up a lot of junk and rolling over to the St Anthony Sand Dunes. It's just west of Yellowstone.

Anyone interested in that?

ST Anthony dunes are out of my range for memorial day.

I'll be camped along 285 and some friends and I would be up for a day trip if anyone is planning something or knows anything that will be open.

About the only trails open would be Twin Cone, Georgia Pass (South Park side), and Four Mile area by BV. Chinamans will be open.

Gabe, you still heading out? There are a bunch of easy trails by Saluda that should be open.

why don't you run Carnage BV? It's easy right? :fsj:

We are hitting the Walden Colorado sand dunes for the next three weekends in a row (starting this weekend 5/20)

I don't think I've got the gas money for Walden.

I'd love to run Yankee Hill and Pickle Gulch in Central City

All of my friends are going to be busy, and I've got to feed the dogs every morning/night so I'm only up for day trips. (But to me a day trip is leaving at 7 and getting home before 2 AM)

The sand dunes are an interesting idea. How much extra gas do you bring since Walden is so far away?

I bring all of my gas cans. Probably about 25 gallons worth of fuel.

The town of Walden is 30 minutes one-way from Camp. We usually have to go into town ever other day or so for supplies. Beer, food, more gas, etc.

I won't be able to do anything for Memorial Day this year as I am spending it (and sending this post) from beautiful western Kazakhstan... town of Tengiz to be precise and my return flight (as it sits right now) has me back in Denver on 6/4/16.
