Tranny & tc mounted

Post by lobie »

The tranny and tc are mounted. Need to clean the cross member up and paint it.

I got some welding to finish up on the coil spring buckets that I will get to next. Also have the aluminum radiator in place with some brackets cut to support it. Going to work on the radiator the rest of the week and mess around with some other stuff. Nothing big till I get the fuel stuff squared away. I want to get it cranked :))

Are you using bushings between the trans/t-case and the cross member, or is it all solid mount?

I have incorporated the stock tranny/tc mount into the cross member. Hard mount is not good, that's how bell housings get cracked. You got to let the tranny rock with the engine.

I'll see if I can get a better pic of the stock mount/bushing.

Here is a pic of the stock mount. It's upside down and not a very good pic.

Ahh ok. Yeah, solid mounts are bad. I have seen some put the bushings on the mounts, which is why I asked.

Finished up the radiator supports and mounted the fan an power steering cooler. Managed to get the fan on the engine side. Pics don't show it clearance too well but there's enough.

Also took the tranny cross member out and finished welding and painted it. Almost all caught up with all the welding. Have to finish welding the sping buckets up. Do that tomorrow.

Rebuilt the ps pump and took the original vacuum pump off and cover plated the openings. Also modified the pump while it was apart. Took the resivor off and tapped the pump for remote tank. Did the west Texas mod. For those that arent familiar you can go here:

http://westtexasoffroad.homestead.com/p ... ering.html

Basically it allows more flow and little more pressure. Eventually going to do hydro asist so with that and hydro boost brakes it will help.

Here's some pics of it and my helper.

He's putting the vanes back in.

Cover plates to cove where the diaphragms bolted.

I like the idea of the upper radiator 'captive' mounts, lets it float with the body flex. Less fatigue on the aluminum that way. How is it held in on the bottom of the radiator? Same? What would keep it from walking from side to side? That motor will produce a lot of minor vibration.

Helpers are good to have. Mine is in college so now I have to crawl out from underneath the jeep and get the tool myself ;)

The bottom is similar to the top. The sides have padded angles that bolt in the stock holes to support it laterally.

Messed around today and rebuilt the stock steering gear. What a pain. I never thought I would hate 24 little balls so much.

If you ever think about doing one get some good interactions. The one I found sucked. I did it cause I've never done one and learning is half the fun for me. Would I ever do one again?....... Yeah I would. It's not that bad once you figure out how the little balls go in.

No pic of it apart.

Also when ahead and tapped 1/4" npt threads in for hydro assist. They are plugged for the time being.

Decided not to do a remote ps reseivor. I extended the stock can and gained almost a quart. Used a piece of exhaust pipe.

Ps pump is installed. Not the prettiest but it's function over form. May change it up later down the road.

Working on getting the hydro boost in and swapping out the pedals. Jeepguyp gave me some cj pedals to see if the fit and I was surprised to see that they are. The bracket at the firewall has a different bolt pattern so I am using the fsj on and just swapping the pedals.

So I take it the return line connects to that fitting up towards the top of the reservoir? Should help in cooling the fluid.

The top fitting is the return from the steering box. There is also a return from the hydro boost which will return back to the original return on the reseivor.

Here's a pic of the pedals. Clutch mc isn't in so the pedal is limp.

I also found this in the truck. probably won't do me much good but it's pretty cool.
