79 Cherokee Chief Cummins 6bt with ford one ton axles

Post by lobie »

I'll start the first thread in this section.

The build is in other places on the web but I'll put it here too.

Started out as a stock 78 chief with a 360. To date the whole drivetrain has been replaced:
90 cummins 6bt
Getrag 360 5 speed tranny
205 tc
Sterling 10.5 rear
Ford 2006 Dana 60
Rear shackle flip
Front ford coil springs

Here are some random pics:

Is that where the original coil mounting location was on the axle? I have not seen that before.

Yes. I have not changed anything on the axle. It's all factory.

Should be an interesting build to watch.
I passed on one of those front 60's thinking it would be too much work for me.
A collection of 1966 to 1986 parts.

I wish I had the tools and ambition to do something like that axle install.

Got a little done this wknd. Welded the front suspension arm up an painted them. Also pulled the tranny out to make an adapter for the transfer case. Going to the machine shop this week to get some parts made for the adapter.

Also swapped out grilles.

Here are some pics.

For some reason each side had a caster difference of 9 deg. Everything was off including spring seats and link mounts. I cut the tube and rotated to correct the difference. The sleeve is for added strength.

Got something done today. Doesn't look like much but got it all tacked up. Since the tc was a divorce tc had to drill and tap holes for the adapter. Thanks to patoyee for the cad templates. Tomorrow I'll weld everything up.

Also got a master cylinder and hydro boost off a 06 ford f350. This should take any guess work out of which cylinder to use with the ford axles.

Will that MC work without the ABS computer?

Form my understanding the abs module goes after the mc. Therefore all computer related stuff is after the mc and the mc just supplies the pressure. Looking at the mc there isn't anything special about it except 2 sensors on it.

If you know something I don't, please inform me.

No I don't know anything specific. Lots of ways oem's handle the ABS. Some have it all integrated, so wasn't sure how Ford did it.

I got the tc put back together today. Took me longer than I thought but it was packed with 30 yrs of dirt and grease. I want to get it as clean as I could. Got the adapter all welded up and painted. Had to incorporate a bearing retainer and shaft seal on the inside so that took some time. It's all ready for intalkarion tommorrow. I do have to replace the rear main seal on the engine and put a new bushing on the fly wheel. It's gonna probably take all day to get it done. Here's some pics.

Tranny & TC installed

I got it all bolted into the jeep today. The back end is supported on a jack stand till I get the cross member made. No pics, looks the same as any other drivetrain from underneath. :ymparty:
