Mile Marker set up their hydraulic winches to work off the powersteering pump at 1500psi and 3.5 gallons per minute. That only gives line speeds of around 5.65 feet per minute. That's pretty darn slow. Then, if you end up having to double or triple line it gets realllllllyyyy sssslllllooowwww. haha

Also, while researching stepping the winch up to 10,500 lbs I noticed that the hydraulic motors Mile Marker chose to use were operating well outside their efficiency range. And it got even worse when stepping flow up to 12 gallons per minute to increase line speed. By choosing another motor that operates at the same speed and torque well within its efficiency range it won't heat the fluid up as quickly, helping keep the temp down. Unlike electric winches, you can run a hydraulic winch all day long, with fluid temp usually being the limiting factor.

Also, by putting a hydraulic pump on the Cummins it opens up the ability to mount a snow plow or some other piece of hydraulic equipment in the future. I have a design in my head for making a detachable auger for boring fence post holes and other things

Just a quick update.

Progress has been getting made, but I had to backup a little. With the craigslist purchase of the hydraulic Mile Marker I had to learn the basics of building a complete hydraulic system. That led to me undoing half the work I had already put into the passenger side inner fender and redoing it. Plus, figuring out how to replace the AC compressor with a hydraulic pump.

Here's something else I've been working on. Getting rid of heat from the engine compartment.

They have a set of four straight louvers that I liked, but I wanted them angled. So I gave them a call and got Dave, the owner. He's a really nice guy and was more than happy to whip out a set of four angled louvers and had them in the mail the next morning. Grand total shipped- $25.

Here's the clearances I have between the hood and engine peripherals. I was a little concerned about the clearance above the intake plenum I made, but have just over 1 1/2".




With the louvers mounted here it places it just behind the turbo, above the downpipe.

Here's another add on I decided to do about a month ago. An intercooler misting cooler system.

It will kick on when boost goes over 25psi, or the transmission temp goes over 220 degrees. I'll also be able to manually turn it on or off.

The pump was mailed straight from China because I couldn't find one in the USA. It's 12V and pumps at 140psi. I actually hooked up a pressure gauge and got a reading over 150psi. The misting noozles come from one of those misting cooling systems people put in their porches.

The mist drops air temp up to 20 degrees and by getting the intercooler and transmission cooler wet they'll disperse heat even better.

Testing the system to see if I wasted my money. Nope. I'll mount them behind the grill work and run 2 to 4 nozzles once I figure out how many I need. With two nozzles it hardly used any of the one gallon of water it was hooked to after 5 minutes.

If you are not going to have AC, I would hook up another set of misting nozzles in the cab!

Haha. Yep. I'm OK without AC up to about 90*. Above that, water spraying all over the inside of the cab might start sounding pretty good.

Here's how the passenger side inner fender turned out.

I'll be mounting a 4.5 gallon hydraulic oil reservoir in the front half. I'll probably plumb it in with quick disconnect fittings so it's easier to remove and work in the engine compartment.

I'm currently working on a 5 layer insulation system to keep turbo heat away from the battery. I'll post more on that later.

I'll throw out some guesses on the 5-layer insulation system between the turbo and battery: fiberglass? fire retardant foam? Sounds very interesting.

You're pretty much on the right track.

The 5 layers will be, starting at the turbo:
1- The turbo hot side and downpipe were ceramic coated.
2 & 3- Double wall, 10" high, .040" aluminum heat shields, spaced 1/2" apart.
4- A 1/2" from the heat shields the inboard and forward walls of a battery box with a radiant heat shield material stuck to it.
The outboard and back walls of the battery box were cut out to let cooler air in from those sides.
5- An air gap and a triple layer of fiberglass blanket material between the battery and inboard/forward battery box walls.

Finally, there are the louvers in the hood, above the turbo and downpipe.

If all of that doesn't keep most of the exhaust heat off the battery I give up and will look for somewhere else to mount the battery.

Hey Resbum,

What does the Raptor feel like? Is it a hard plastic-like feel like Line-X or more rubbery like Rhino, if you are familiar with them?

I'm thinking about doing the interior and dash and want something soft, especially on the doors above the panels.

I've got a sample of smooth Durabak and SPI's two part liner. Nothing from Raptor yet.

Sorry for this very late reply. I've been on a three week break from the truck and internet and missed your post to my build thread.

I've only applied my Raptor reduced and thin, like paint. When applied like that, to me and the two bodywork/paint guys I've showed it to it feels more like vinyl than anything else. You should ask Mudbull in his build thread and get his impression.

As I just mentioned above, I took an unintentional break from the truck for the last few weeks to house sit for my parents. I didn't realize how much I needed a break, but now I'm back at it and ready to get it finished.

June 24th, 2013 marked two years since I took the first nut and bolt off the truck and started this project. During that time I've worked on the truck six to seven days a week almost nonstop. Now it's time to go on a push and finish it so I can get moved to my property in eastern Oregon before winter.

Sorry for dropping off the face of the earth. The truck has been on hold the last few months. Money has become an issue. More accurately, a lack of money became the issue.

I've been doing things here and there as I can, but not at near the pace I worked for the last two years. I'll organize my thoughts and some of the pics I've taken and post an update soon.

My new goal is to work on it through this next winter and hopefully have it finished by mid-summer next year.
