Allison 1000 transfer case options

Postby Grand_Wag_85 » Sun Oct 23, 2016 11:13 am

What transfer case options are out there for the Allison 1000?

Brainstorming for a future LLY Duramax swap into a GW and would like a transfer case with the AWD(full time 4WD) feature in 4HI like the NP229.

To use anything other than the t-case that came behind it you need an adapter. Its a non standard output shaft. AA makes an adapter to fit other t-cases.

The Duramax will come with either the NV261 or NV263. The 261 is manual shift. The 263 is electric shift.

Both are the 2HI/4HI/N/4LO type, just like a 208/231/241.

There really isn't a good option to retain the All Wheel Drive high range. At least not one that can handle the power of the Duramax. Going up in strength in the NVG family, you only have the NV271 and NV273 which are just beefier versions of the 261 and 263 respectively. To get AWD in an NVG case, you have to step down to the 24x series and they aren't built to handle a diesel. You maybe could find a case from a different manufacturer but adapting it would be a little challenging.

I recently started looking into this transmission a little because it came behind the Cummins 3.9 ISB, which was a 2WD setup of course. I was told you have to do a divorced TC behind it.

where there is a will there is a way....

I took a T56 6 speed and with corvette parts and some garage fabbed adapters I bolted an NVG 149 to the back of it. The setup has several thousand miles on it without any issues.

The NVG 149 is a pretty stout case but I wouldn't subject it to diesel torque.

1 = single speed
4 = strength (rated 1-9 IIRC)
9 = viscous coupler

Do you have any pics of this setup?
