I finally have the wife talked into fuel injection. Now I'm trying to find a happy medium between cost, ease of installation, and ease of maintenance. That said, I'm lookin at systems from Howell, and systems from FiTech.
I'm a FI noob. I understand the basics, but don't really have the time to learn much more than that, due to work (I'm averaging 25 to 30 hours of OT per week).
The Fitech systems do not come with a timing system. They claim that their 600hp system can do timing by "locking out the advance and plugging in a simple 2 wires" but I highly doubt that. pfisys.com sells a GM TBI system for AMC engines for $995, new FI distributor and all. I would go with that if I wasn't doing DIY, or I would jump up in price to buy Bill Hamilton's setup. He's the guru.
1990 Grand Wagoneer 440 swap, 727 MVB, NP208, D44 F/R 4.10 gears ZIP locker up front Detroit out back. So much other stuff. Check out the build.

Thanks for that link, they aren't that far away, either.
The fitech does offer timing control. I'm not sure if it will control a motorcraft dist with a hei module but it should control a hei with a 7 pin module.
I was sold on Hamilton for the longest while. I installed a Howell on a Cherokee and wouldn't buy one. But with both of those systems you are getting reconditioned parts. With fitech its all new. Plus lifetime warranty on ecu. Plus the dashboard to program and watch what's going on.....all for bout the same price. $1195 with external fuel pump, lines and fittings with free shipping from pace performance.
Ever since I find this system I've been scouring the net for info. Haven't been able to find a bad review or complaint. Everyone says how good their customer service is. I've emailed a couple of times and usually get a response within the hour.
It looks like the FITech "kit" price does NOT include a fuel pump. They have a neat "sump" pump adapter and a regular "in-line" fuel pump kit available. IMHO, the in-line fuel "kit" is a little overpriced for what you get. But I can be pretty stingy....
OTOH, the FITech kit uses a wideband O2 sensor for tuning, so that's nice. I don't know how well it "tunes", as I've never used it. But I'm sure you'd have no problem figuring it out. Depends if you have the time or not.
The Howell kit comes complete and uses "standard" GM parts. You can get em anywhere. I've always liked that. I've never heard that they were "reconditioned" parts. <shrug> Either way, the ECMs are pretty bullet proof. For a turnkey system, it can't be beat IMHO. Bolt it on, weld in the O2 sensor and off you go.
The Howell system is also a great springboard if you want to get up and running NOW and then later want to come back and start modding things.
I would go fitech 100 times over. The only advantage of a gm system is parts availability. The tunability and modern technology of the fitech makes it a no brainer to me. But that is just me. I have only heard excellent reviews on the fitech systen

Yes, all gm sensors except for bosch wide band. I'm pretty sure the Jeg's msd clone distributor will work for timing control. About $235. Not bad when a good hei unit is bout $150

That's great news!

I have heard that fitech now has a system for up to 400hp, no timing control for $795, personally I like the idea of timing control but for those who do not its a great option.
