TBI or TPI Help greatly appreciated

Post by edmoss »

I purchased my 89 wagoneer around 3 weeks ago,It has a stock 360 that I blown. I have talked to some folks local and been lurking on here and some other forums and I have decided I want to do the TBI chevy 350. In my search for a TBI engine I have ran across a good deal on a chevy 350 TPI was told out of a camaro, I am unsure of the year at this point I'm in process of finding out more info. It has 40k miles on it I was told for 750 dollars.

Questions are what all has to be modified or added to the wagoneer for it to work? I know the tranny and transfer case, I know the engine mounts.

What ecm will I need? I do not think the engine has one with it, it is pulled already.
What wiring harness?

I have never worked on a fuel injection system... I know I will need help here.

I am planning on replacing/upgrading radiator from Novak already.

Just trying to decide if I should jump on the TPI deal complete engine or keep looking for a TBI motor or a 350 block and then covert to TBI?

Guys and Gals your knowledge, insight and help is greatly appreciated. I hope to begin my build thread soon.

Thanks,
Ed

Personally I think that is too much for not being able to hear it run and not having PCM and wiring with it. I gave $900 for my 5.3L with wiring harness, radiator, all accessories, tranny, tcase, drive shafts and all a/c components and hoses. I sold the np246 tcase for $300 and bought two np241c tcase's for $150.
I did have to pull it myself but I preferred to do that anyway so I would know where wires were cut and what parts I got.

If its from a camaro, make sure it really is a 350. The vast majority of camaro's that came with EFI had 305's.

$750 seems a bit steep to me as well considering there is no wiring, which will be required to make it run. You will also need to adapt it to your transmission (TF727 with an AMC pattern), or get a GM transmission. And since you are driver drop, you would need a t-case from an IFS GM that has a driver drop t-case. You can adapt your stock NP229 to a GM trans, in some cases with no mods. Just depends on the trans.

Agree. A TPI 350, with no wiring or ECM, is worth no more than $350. That's assuming it is a 350. For $750 you can get a complete 5.3L with transmission. A TPI engine harness and computer will run you around $700. Howell has them.
