I'm putting the throttle body on my intake manifold. What is the trick with the throttle cable shaft of the 258?

What do you mean? The rod that pulls down? It just pops off, IIRC.

I'd suggest you use a piece of 10-32 all-thread and these rod ends to substitute for the fixed length rod - https://www.pegasusautoracing.com/produ ... ?RecID=181 I bought some from Summit, but I could not find them there now. Maybe they have them, if you pick the right search terms.

Shoulda been more clear on that, it was late and I was cold and tired from wrenching outside.

On my 258 the throttle cable exits the stock bracket attached to the manifold underneath and almost ahead of the throttle pegs on the throttle body. if I hook the throttle lever/shaft up there is so much bind in the system that the accelerator pedal can not be used. I borrowed a piece off of one of my other 258's and made a 90* shaft which helped but did not cure the problem. the pedal seems to want to stick at or near WOT and default there.

____________________________________________________________________________

On a different note IT RUNS! Sort of.....

had to play with the timing a good bit (with set timing wire disconnected) and I got it to start but it pretty much immediately stalls out. The longest I had it running was maybe 10 seconds before it stalled. I could definitely tell the computer was trying its best to control everything but I just can't get it to maintain an idle.

Pretty sure I flooded the engine so I'm done for tonight.

This is with a generic stock 258 tune.

Still having trouble and can't get the engine to run or sputter at all. No more visible fuel spray from the injectors, only code is a code 12.

Just verifying the initial startup needs the set timing wire disconnected, correct?

The system requires spark/tach signal to have the injectors fire.
If you have fuel pressure for the 2 sec the pumps runs on the initial key on then verify you have 12v to the red wires at the injectors with the key on.
Then you can connect a test light between the leads on the injector connector and it should blink as you crank.
If you have the 12v with key on but no blick when cranking then the ecm is not getting the tach signal from the ignition module or you have a wiring problem.

Got it running now. My main issues were fuel leaks and a so/so connection with the IAC. I have to build a linkage for the throttle then I can drive it.

Went for my 1st test drive. Massive ping on acceleration/little to no power and a code 45.

Timing?

is code 45 ECM failure? maybe you have the wrong wiring on the dizzy/coil?

Possibly way too rich. The CEL came on the moment I got ping and about 100 yards from the garage.

OK, the source of my code 45 was a vacuum leak. I'm running my MAP sensor directly from the manifold and I left the stock port uncapped. Runs good now and starts better but acceleration seems sluggish.

I'm getting there :)

If no ping, then I would check timing advance.

My ECM drives the timing so I'll need to plug in. Gonna drive it for awhile and everywhere that needs improvement.

Changed my plugs and most of the ping went away, but it's still there. Going to back-off the static timing and recheck.

On the 258 to retard the timing I want to spin the distributor clockwise, correct? The firing direction is clockwise.

On my last ride as soon as it got to operating temp (closed loop) the code 45 came back.

Has anybody had an issue with their stock return line being too restrictive? I've been told this can trigger the 45.

Can you take and post a short video of your injectors firing? That can sometimes tell us if they are just dumping way too much fuel.

Took the video, then adjusted the timing. Starts easier and seems to run better now but still getting the code 45.

I *might* have an engine ground issue. The temp gauge on the dash is pegged all the way to max so maybe that's why the engine is running rich?

Here is the video of the car running. Without the aircleaner in place the injectors are VERY loud, clickety clack!

Doesn't the temp gauge peg when it is disconnected?? <shrug>

Injectors look like they're firing normal. At the least, they're not dumping HUGE amounts of fuel into the engine and nor are they leaking.

Yes, without the air cleaner, you'll hear the injectors as well as the air rushing through the IAC.

Without some data logging, it's going to be hard to troubleshoot. :- /

It'll be a week or so for the datalogging. How far should I drive while plugged in?

Drives much better now BTW. Idle is way too high but that's an easy fix.

Start cold (just so we can see what it's doing then) and I usually go for at least 10-15 minutes after it's warmed up and in closed loop mode.

When you post your log file, also post your tunerPro files so we can look at it with the same "decoder" file you're using.
