Gen III info

Post by hutcho »

Hey guys I am seriously considering a 5.3 or 6.0 for my j10. I know there are a ton of REALLY great build threads on here and the other site. What im curious about is pricing. What do you guys have into it on average. I can get an idea on the big ticket items but its the small stuff that makes these projects always fail. Also I have seen at least 1 thread with a parts list. Does anyone know of more?

The D20 has some weak spots that would make it iffy behind an engine that actually has some power. It may be worth while to use a D300 from an 80's CJ.

Its just a bewfier dana 20 right? I think the adapter is around the same price for it as well. Is there a more modern twin stickable passenger drop out there? I may have too many requirements lol

Well, its similar to the D20. It has a much better low range, much stronger outputs (Especially the rear), they use helical cut gears (much quieter), and they use an NP pattern (Well except for the rare scout version). So adapting them to later transmissions is easier.

The rear output is not as strong as say an NP208/NP241/etc. Its still the big weak point of the D300.

Ok I have been researching it some tonight. Seen most prices in the 3-350 range and the adapter is about 200 less than the dana 20 so with some searching I bet it will balance out.

Twin stick an NP205. You can get it either pass or driver drop. Very strong all gear drive case.

Yeah most 205's are figure 8 pattern. Round pattern ones are less common. And their adapters are really long.

It is most definitely the little stuff... both in money as well as time.

Went to the salvage yard today and got a steering column from a Chevy Van to disassemble so I can get the shift quadrant out of it. This will give me the correct detentes with the 4L60E. I also got the shift indicator from the same van. It's exactly the same as the ones in our GWs, but marked for overdrive.

Here is the perfect adapter (I called it will fit a 205) They build it with whatever in/out shaft you need and it's not too long. (Just expensive)

I'm just in the beginning phases of my 5.3L swap but my budget price is roughly $4800. Keep in mind as you said all the small easy to forget bits and pieces. I'm going to post my budget spreadsheet to my build thread and keep track of every penny leaving my pocket.

Also that $4800 price includes $450 for new dakota digital dash (still contemplating this option), and a $450 cost for the 7004r to QT adaptor from advance adaptors. You could save money by running a GM tcase. My QT is recently rebuilt and I have no plans of heavy offroading, if any at all with my J10 that is why I'm hanging on to the QT.

Wow... I wish! My engine/transmission cost me $3,300 (2008 LY5/4L60E). I figure, with all the various things not exactly "engine" related, I should end up in the $9K range

I should mention that this will put me a good $2K over my carefully projected budget.

Wowsers, well I'm opting for a motor ten + years old and over 100k miles. Around here I can get them $600-$900. I had a chance for a 4.8L with 30k miles for $1300 but I was talked out of it for the 5.3L.

That newer 5.3L should work nicely for you though!

I should mention that the $3,300 price included the engine, transmission, computer, wiring harness, all accessories (A/C compressor, alternator, P/S pump, etc).

It did have 100K miles, but I saw the truck it came out of, and, when I rebuilt the transmission, I saw how clean it was inside.

My total also includes the transmission rebuild kit, tools needed for the rebuild, trans-transfer case adapter, etc, etc.

I posted my budget prices on my build thread maybe I'm low on prices but I'm figuring $600-900 motor complete with harness and pcm, $75 for trans (already purchased), $1000 trans rebuild, $450 pcm programming and wire harness thinning, $400 motor replacement parts (timing chain etc). So that said I'm at $2,525 for motor and trans if math is right.

Crazy how fast stuff adds up!

Well things have came up and I drifted away for awhile but this is back on my mind again. Could be cause my daily driver is a 2wd silverado and we just got snow and ice, kinda be nice to have the jeep going again. Anyway, was looking and dreaming today and got a new problem. My d44 is a passenger side drop. Normally wouldnt be a big deal but I got over 2k into that stupid axle now and 0 miles on it yet. Is there an option to get a passenger drop with the lsx swap? I would be ok with the 4l60e but would prefer a standard. I thought I saw an adapter to mate up my d20. Would that be suicide for my d20? Again I got a little in to it and really would like to keep my twin sticks.

So what all are my options here? Budget is limited but if there is a reasonable option I can just wait longer and make it work. Thanks guys!
