Air cleaner housing options for Howell TBI

Post by 4x4Dad »

I'm adding a Howell TBI setup to my rig in a few weeks, and I'm figuring I'll have to ditch the stock snorkel air cleaner housing with all its vacuum ports and the hole for the manifold heat riser. For those of you who've done this, what are my replacement options, above and below the typical round filter?

I bought a cheap TBI cold air set-up off eBay.
Do a search there is a ton of them.
Replaced the cheapo air filter that came with for a K&N unit.

You can reuse your stock air cleaner. If the OP has the TBI system from Howell, there is no GM collar with the kit.

You can leave the vac hose off the heat riser flap and it will remain closed.

I don't have the Howell kit yet (I'm hoping it's in the mail from BJ's/Howell soon), but this is good to hear. I'm trying to source all the extra parts I'm going to need when I take it into the shop in the next week, and I wasn't sure if the stock cleaner would fit over the GM throttle body.

The GM throttlebody is the same 4 1/8 base as the 4 bbl. So any 4bbl aircleaner and some of the old holley/motorcraft 2bbl aircleaners.

Summit has aircleaner spacers in different hieghts should you need a little more clearance for the throttle arm. The summit brand is pretty cheap compared to the GM used ones being sold on ebay.

Also keep in mind that the cowl vent area in front of the windshied is a high pressure area and good for a cold air intake along with the hoses ducted thru the radiator core support.

This is a pretty popular aircleaner.
It's the early 90's caprice. You can run it fwd or backwards. I run the inlet hose thru my firewall into the vent grille area for a cold air inlet.

You can also hit ebay and get any of those bling cold air kits that fit the 4 1/8 base and bolt them on.
Lots of options.
