Do I need an adapter?

Already have an Edelbrock intake and 1407 carb. About to drop the coin for Sniper EFI. Should be a direct swap, correct? Holley just says "Dual Bolt Pattern" for the flange style. The intake came on the engine when I bought the truck so I don't know much about it. Does Edelbrock make multiple styles for AMC? I don't know, so, I'm asking you guys. :D

Look on the front by the oil fill. Should have the name there. Probably a Performer. There is a EGR and non EGR version. Should be the same except for that. What is a Sniper EFI? Guess I will google. Just googled. Looks cool. Not sure if I could do $1200.00 though. Please let us know how it goes.

Backordered til next month but; ordered it this morning, anyway. Pretty sure it's a Performer intake. From the small bit of research I've done, I think it'll be fine.

I will definitely let everyone know how it goes. Never been a fan of Holley carbs, so I'm a bit hesitant on this venture. Hope I didn't just waste a huge amount of money on a truck that only cost twice as much as that EFI.

Holley has been in the EFI game for a long time. I'd buy a Holley system over the other choices without hesitation.

I doubt you'll regret the decision to install an EFI system.

To answer your main question, Edelbrock has made 5 AMC V-8 intakes that I know of. The Performer w/EGR, Performer w/o EGR, Performer Air-Gap,the Torker and the SP2P. The most common is the Performer (With or without EGR) and that's most likely what you have. The air gap and Torker are racing intakes meant for track and strip cars, and are easy to identify with a passing glance. The SP2P is an economy intake that's great for smaller engines like my 304, but marginable on a 360 or bigger. It has long, skinny runners that improve vacuum, fuel atomization, and intake velocity; but in engines 360ci and bigger, it starts to choke them like Bart Simpson over 3000rpm.

All of the Edelbrock intakes I've had are square bore, and I THINK that's all they make for AMCs. The Sniper EFI looks like it is also square bore, so you should be good. However, if it were mine I would still used a phenolic spacer at least 1/2" thick to insulate the throttle body from the intake. :-bd

Torker: Huge, short runners in a single plane (side by side, they don't overlap eachother). Name is misleading because it destroys low-end torque. Design is for WOT, fuel/air mixture has as little resistance and distance as possible between the butterflys and the intake valves.

Air Gap: Literally has a gap between the carb flange and the sealing flange.

SP2-P: The only Edelbrock intake I know of that has a choke stove. SP2-P is cast right in front, right behind the oil fill tube, characters are about 3/4" tall.

On an odd note, Offenhauser used to make an AMC intake, but performance wise, it was comparable to the stock intake except it was made of aluminum. For off-road and Daily Driving, that's actually a really good thing. They're not worth shopping for though, because the vintage racers will pay top dollar for them. If by some odd chance that's what you have, consider yourself lucky!

EDIT>>> This was the good one that performs like a stock manifold off road and DDing: Note the shape of the plenum and divider of the runners:

I don't know who's using Offenhausers name, but the pictures of the currently available AMC Offy look like a flattened Torker. I don't know if they're comparable.

Thanks for the info, REDONE. I finally took a good look at the manifold today. It's definitely a Performer non-egr, so I shouldn't need an adapter.

And in taking a good look, I noticed that my PCV valve was sticking up out of the rubber grommet half an inch or so. Any chance a failing valve could cause excess pressure to push coolant out, intermittently? Been trying to figure out why this leak comes and goes, for a month now.

Looks like a neat system! I like the LCD screen. Looks like it also functions as a digital dash. Hopefully you can also program it from there.

It does function as a digital dash but, sounds like it's somewhat limited on what can be tuned from it. Just basic things like rev limit, target idle, target AFR, and such. However, Holley has a tuner for laptops on their website, for the Sniper. Just need the USB cable.

GET IT, then!! LOL!!

Tuning is so much fun!!

Not to confuse but Offenhauser still makes intakes for AMC. The dual port is a joke, sales gimmick during the fuel crisis. The good Offy intake is the 360°. It's a single plane design with a divider and flows very well while maintaining low end torque.
Also, the AMC Torquer still has the choke stove provision for some reason and the Air gap is a dual plane similar to the Performer and also available with EGR and non.

One last note. Do some research about Sniper EFI and dual plane intakes. Some are having tuning issues with the split planes and it seems Holley's solution is to recommend a single plane intake.

A spacer, without a divider between planes, seems to be the solution, as well as some minor tuning, apparently. Which looks to be more advanced than I thought:

Did I mention that I've never been fond of Holley? 18 days past when my EFI was supposed to ship, and not a word from them, yet.

I've seen this issue on Engine Masters [with the OEM engineer on site] with the Holley Sniper and the FItec. They couldn't get good fuel ratios due to turbulence and switched over to a single plane manifold.

Good news!!! Got an email, with tracking number, from Holley today! Supposed to be here Thursday. Install next weekend!

Sniper arrived just after lunch today. Gonna be a fun weekend. Hopefully, I won't need too many extras. Hard to get speed-shop type stuff, here. Temp sensor (common issue for them to be off 20°) shouldn't be bad but, anything else could be.

Anyway, I'll try to take a few pics but, only if nobody makes fun of my filthy engine bay! :P

I removed an old sensor from my header collector, only to find that the bung is extremely rusted and the threads are gone. Not sure why but, there is a second bung on the number 5 down-tube. Not really sure why it has O2 sensors at all, considering it's always been carb'd, as far as I know. Anyway, would there be a problem with using this location for a SniperEFI, until I can get the other one fixed? It's about 6" from the flange.

Hullo...

Then there is the R4B:

I have been running SP2P on a .030 over 401 since 2004 and never had a Bart Simpson choke down. It easily goes to 5k.

Took the header off today and welded a new bung in. Learned that they are Hedman brand and whoever installed them used silicone for gaskets. Got a real set ordered. Gotta love POs.

And a pic of the new sensor, installed:

Looking forward to getting EFI installed! Pray for no more snags this weekend!
