Thanks! I'm mainly interested in what others have done for in-tank pumps. I'm going fuel injection and want all those in-tank benefits. Curious who's done it with what pump or complete unit and what had to be done to make it work.

The issue I had was getting the wiring into and back out of the tank. The 91 Blazer tank is the best solution, IMHO. But you lose your spare spot. Never mind, I see you have a J truck....
Someone else here was putting an aftermarket conversion in, but it involved hammering out a flat spot on his metal tank. No so easy to do with a plastic tank. Not sure which one yours has.
Dr. Marnus is putting a tanks Inc. set up in his wag. It's pretty slick. I'll probably be helping him tomm. Not sure if it will work in a j truck tank tho cause ours are deeper......
Yes it's been done, what pump you use depends mostly on what system you'll be using.
I used a stock GM TBI pump, and stuffed it in there with a modified jeep sender.
If you have a metal tank with separate fuel pick and sender it would be pretty easy.
Mine has the poly tank with integrated pickup/sender so choices were limited, and pretty much impossible to modify tank.
Here is what my '88 got modified with 3/8" supply, and 5/16" return.

It's just an Airtex pump & strainer, (PN's E3902 & FS1).
For a 1990 Chevy truck w/ 5.7L, paid ~$25 in 2011...pump has lifetime warranty.
Been problem free, and works well, I'm running a standard GM TBI system ('87-'93 1227747)
I even ran E85 for a while with it, and it did fine, no issues.
The reason I went with a stock pump is reliability/availability. If the thing ever craps out the pump is available just about anywhere and cheap.
Sure you can go crazy with a high dollar fancy aftermarket set-up, but if it ever craps out on you, how quickly can you get a replacement?
Is it a vendor specific part that you have to order directly from them or online only?
Same with the GM TBI, parts available anywhere and cheap, new or used. I've personally never had a failure that made me dead in the water, but if I do nice to know I can go to any junkyard or parts store and get the parts quickly to fix it.

I already knew I wanted a stock in tank pump but debating modifying my sender, building one around a common pump, modifying a stock sender from another vehicle, or hopefully: find a common stock sender from another vehicle that drops right in. I cut an access plate into my bed a long time ago, but still want to go the route that is least likely to need to open it.

Dunno 'bout j-truck, but '79 wag/Cherokee have separate fuel pickup and sender units. Is J-truck sender/pickup integrated?
I am running a plastic tank from a 97 and up XJ with a factory in tank pump. I have it mounted where the spare tire was.
I modded the XJ sending unit/fuel pump with parts from it and a WJ sending unit so I could have a return line. The stock XJ sending unit is a returnless design with a built in regulator that was too high for what I wanted. The WJ uses a separate regulator so it has a return.
Unfortunately, I did not take a pictures or document the process.
