5.7 TBI or 5.3 Vortec

Post by 81waggy »

Need some advice. Building a daily driver and not sure which is the way to go. TBI sounds like an easier swap, but the Vortech sounds like a better swap overall. thoughts?

5.3 LS any day. The 5.7 TBI is essentially the same 5.7 motor from since before time began. It's a dinosaur. Why replace a dinosaur with another dinosaur? (Yes, thank you, I know I am a hypocrite) The 5.3 motors are more powerful, more efficient, and much more modern. You can find them in any pick-a-part and they have an absolutely massive aftermarket following for swapping into just about anything.

After dealing with both TBI and vortec (and I have programmers for both) I personally prefer the vortec stuff. OBDII

Of course you have to actually have a vortec engine though (and yes, I know there are ways of putting vortec stuff on old motors, but that is another story).

if for no other reason, the OBDII stuff allows you to 'wirelessly' interface with your system via your phone. In fact, when I drive my dually on th hwy, I setup my phone on the dash and I have the Torque app displaying all the realtime info. Can't really do that with the old TBI stuff (well you can, with a custom OBDI bluetooth interface that is $$$)

5.2 Magnum out of a 95- ZJ or Dakota. But if you're really wanting GM the 5.3 Vortec is superior in every way to the old TBI. TBI is just a electronic carb. If you're gonna swap, might as well get all the bennies of MPFI.
